I went nuts looking for an article in my reference books. As you knowm sometimes a good tip is one line in a magazine.
So, I took all my reference books (now over 200) and numbered them on the cover. Then I selected categories; "assembly", "insignia", "scenery", "vehicles" and "weathering", to name a few of the 26 categories. Then I went through every book and every article or printout (many from Armorama) that I put in notebooks. I entered them in Excel and sorted by category first and topic second. There is a column for page number, etc. I have a column for comments like "this is the best!".
As I add more references, I just resort and reprint. Now, I can find that elusive tip about a campfire in "scenery", then "fire", then "campire-how to". It's BOOK 24, Page 16!
I also entered my list of figures on another spreadsheet, so I know what I have before I start digging. If I have the right figure and pose, it saves time from modifying a figure.
