I found this tutorial for making barbed wire , on a warhammer 40k site called "the smoking bolter"
I think the end result looks pretty convincing and most importantly is a lot cheaper than buying photo etched sets.

Wow, that's pretty nice razor wire. I'll have to look for that mesh next time I go to the craft shop!
