Hey Guys,
I am looking for a Canadian RTV rubber source. I live in the Ottawa area and have called every plastic and chemical place with no joy. I know I can pick it up at the local hobby shop but the price is just too prohibitive and whol knows how long its been sitting on the shelf as I have been told it has a VERY short shelf life. I can find all the resin I could ever use but no RTV. Help here would be great. Thanks in advance.

Bryan,

I get my supplies from these guys.

http://www.sculpturesupply.com/

The Smooth On RTV I use goes for about $35 per 2 lb pack. The instructions say you have to be really cvareful to measure the ratios of rubber to hardener and to use a gram scale to get it right. Frankly, I always go by the colour but it can take a couple of attempts to get it just right.

This rubber isn't good for real production, as I can usually only get abuot 25-35 copies of a part before the RTV breacks down even when I use a mold release to protect the rubber from the resin. Still, for home casting it's a good compromise of durability versus cost.

The rubber comes in various hardnesses, I usually use the 30 of 40 Shore hardness packs, the 20 is too soft for me.

Bryan

Did you try CANUS plastics? They're just off Bank just north of Cooper.

They were my first call..They stopped carrying it a few years ago..There just wasnt the market for it. Like I said the shelf life is quite short so no one wants to stock it if no one is gonna buy it. Oh well. But thanks for the reply none the less.

Bryan,

I've used "DOW CORNING HS II" RTV Moldmaking Rubber. It is a 2 part mix that de-airs itself, is quite resilient. I purchase it from Industrial Plastics - It is a bit pricey at $50 +tax but that includes the catalyst.

Good info to have. I was relying on the LHS but sometimes it takes forever to get stuff. Doug
