Warning, reflection follows:
Thanksgiving is really my wife’s “thing.” We have some 50 odd family and friends over for the whole spread every year. Three years ago I went to the local Mega-Lo-Mart at 8 am Thursday to morning to grab all the stuff we always forget and get some wine. Well, they didn’t have the wine I wanted. I thought my day was ruined. I walked around the corner with the last of what I needed to feed 50 people in my cart and almost bumped into an elderly woman and two young kids. They weren’t dressed the best, but they were immaculately clean. They had just enough food in their cart for a decent dinner for four people. Turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, etc. And, they were beaming, big smiles on all three faces. I said “Excuse me.” And the woman said, “Excuse me. And, have a happy Thanksgiving.” They were happy, obviously very thankful, for what they had and I was upset because the store did not have the wine I wanted. I felt so selfish and spoiled I actually cried on the way back to my house.
Thanksgiving has never been the same since for me. Remember, no matter how much you think you have, there is always someone who has more than you. And, more importantly, no matter how much you think you need, there is someone whose need is greater than yours
Happy Thanksgiving everyone. The people I have “met” here are certainly one of things that I am thankful for.
