A Wing and a Prayer
Just as Jack Northrup was on the verge of perfecting a practical flying wing, his radical XB-49 in the 1940s, the Air Force suddenly cancelled the project in favor of a more conventional design. His hopes shattered, Northrup resigned from the company that bore his name and went into early retirement. But in the 1990s, sick and confined to a wheelchair, the aviation genius was brought to a hangar at Northrup to view the first prototype of a plane that was inspired by his XB-49--the B-2 Stealth Bomber.
