On Sunday I got a bird from work to take me to Whitby. For those overseas Whitby is a small town near the sea and is where Captain Cook (who discovered Australia) was from.
Whitby has also aquired a reputation for being slightly spooky, there is a ruined abbey on the top of the hill and in the book Dracula it is where Count Dracula first arrives in England.
Well we got there and the town was full of Goths. I've never seen so many in one place before and their costumes were fantastic. It was only then that we remembered it was halloween and it turned out that it was a Goth weekend at whitby.
I thought they looked so cool that I tried to start an argument with the bird who took me so that she would drive back on her own in a sulk and I could stay all night and make my own way back next day, but she wouldn't bite. Anyway my parting view of them was seeing them all gathered together and a Salvation Army band playing hymns nearby. A really sureal scene.

This bird is one which someone taught to talk and it never shuts up. I believe they are fairly common.
I shouldn't really say that, she is a good mate and I bully her into taking me all over the place. Mind you, I make it up to her in other ways.

Try to imagine having a Goth in your house

My daughter (who is turning 17 very soon) is starting to became a Gotch, and man she scarred the s***t out of me when I walked down the stairs without the lights on

I have Halloween at my house 24/7

One thing I did notice about the goths was there seemed to be two types. The first were the ones that dressed to look scary, the women had black lipstick and devil type necklaces.
The other types wore clothes from the gothic era, long black coats, top hats, silver tiped canes etc. The one thing they all had in common was that they all seemed to be wearing footwear based on Klingon boots from the Star Trek movies.
I must admit I would have dressed in a similar fashion if I'd known they would have been there. They looked so cool and smart.

Ignorant question, please... what exactly does "GOTH" mean. I came across this while translating a film for subtitling and I didn't know what it means.

Salaam, Hisham!
Goth is short for "Gothic", & is used by a segment of the population who likes to romanticize past eras. The dress & lifestyles adopted by these folks ranges widely, from those who follow the "Ageless Ones"(Vampyr- they dress in mostly black, with pale skin accentuated by black makeup) to those who prefer a more victorian look, with corsets, high boots, feathers, Poofy shirts, etc.
Just a fad.
[EDIT]- Many of the 'Vampyr' Goths also go in for "Blood Rituals" such as letting, drinking, self-mutilation, piercing, branding, blood fetishism(sex),etc. As a whole, however, they're relatively harmless.

Saturday Night Live had a short stint where they mocked the whole "Goth" thing back in the late 90's - very funny. South Park also had one episode in particular where they had "Goths" on it. I will say this - some of the most beautiful girls I ever saw while in College were "Goths"

Thanks for explaining it, LogansDad. I'm having trouble trying to say that in just one or two words in Arabic. Very difficult to translate slang and cultural differences. But thanks again.

I seen Marylin Manson twice in concert, and it was freaky. The Goth look is taken to the extreme in Stockholm, where as styles were more individual in England or Ireland they tend to mix the headbanger, punk, goth, etc. together, here. On the trains and underground on the morning, you dont know whether to laugh or cry at some of the make-up displays ... and thats just the girls :-) Cool and smart?? Not IMO.

Thanks for the clarification guys...me being a historian was thinking that it was a bunch of big burley guys wearing animal skins and chain link armor as in the ancient warriors. that fought for control of France and Germany with Rome. There is a show on American tv called NCIS where one of the characters is a Goth. (in the modern sense of the word) Man I wouod kill to get an opportunity to date her.
