I believe we left Beautiful Baumholder sometime ago. 8th Infantry Division use to be based there. Is there someone who might have more current information.

What museum? I was stationed there from 77-80. Ramstein and Kaiserslauten are still active and only 50 -60 klics away. The only thing I remember about Baumholder was that 90 % of the town was filled with bars and GI- hating citizens. (30 years worth of 'ugly" americans)

Steve-- maybe that is what the museum contains--cheap bars and marvelous German "hospitality."

Could be DJ.... the nice thing about being an officer with my own car and the ability to speak passable German is that once I got away from the town of Baumholder the Germans were great people. I guess if you had to deal with 30 years of drunk GI's that had been exploited by so many in the town you wouldn't be too fond of us either.

Steve-- I always found Graf, Hohensfel and "der Baum" rather notorious for ripping us off. I was in Schweinfurt the last time over and those folks were very decent to us and we in turn were decent to them.

We used to call them "fish" bars. Had some decent looking women that would hit on the GI's to buy them drinks and then after getting the GI to spend most of his money get up and go after another which led to fights and MP's being called and listening to the bar owners complain about the lousy obnoxious GI's that he was helping to exploit. I wasn't to popular down there 'cause I would pull my boys out. Me and a couple of my NCO's would make the rounds and check for platoon members in the bad joints. Try to get them to go to the strip bar where they at least got to see something and knew not to mess with the girls

only riot I was ever in... downtown Baumholder on an early Saturday evening. Had to pick something up to go to a party when in the middle of the street one American vs 3 Germans....next thing you know 10 Americans..then 15 more Germans ...then the MP's....HOO HAAA. needless to say that took a while to sort out. Must say though the lone GI was one of mine and he handled himself quite well....I even was able to convince the MP's to release him in my custody. Ah the privledges of rank. I got to bust one German good and then wisely backed up when I saw the MP's arrive (heh - heh).

1-68 Armor attached to 1-2 Arty for 6 months as a fire support chief 77-79 as my ETS was close I got the option to head stateside or move to Wildflicken when they relocated the battalion. Baumholder was bad enough, but Chickin-Licken...no way ! MOved to Alabama and joined the 87th MAC which was an extremely positive experience.
