Recently I have gotten hold of a lawn trimmer like this.

Anyway, i notice everytime i have finished cutting lots of grass gets into the guard near the whipping thingy. This grass is in really really small pieces and seem to be just the correct size to add to my dioramas.
Do any of you think this is suitable?
And also how do I stop it from going brown after a while?

Not sure how it would stand up.
It would certainly turn brown or go straw coloured but only if it stayed dry.
If it gets wet re: watered glue it just might start decomposing....to compost.
But if its painted with a spirit based paint, that might be enough to preserve it...???

You could always do a little test.
If it works it'll be a very cheap way of doing grass...it is grass...lol.
Cheap if you've already got the strimmer that is

Worth a bit of investigation anyway.
Not much grass here though in Riyadh.

Cheers

I just dont see how it would work. I dont think it would work for anything at all that you can put in a dio and you would just make a huge mess. Sorry but I dont think so.

Hmmmm...
I still think its worth a try.
When I think about it. There are a load of ornamental and dried grasses available for doing artistic things with.
As long as it stays dry or is coated or soaked in some kind of preservative it might work.
Also herbs are often used in dios, so dried grass may have a similar use and performance.

Well I've already got the trimmer so its worth a try.
it really looks the right size, it looks like its been put through a blender(well it has!).
i will give it a try and post the results in a few weeks time.

Try glycerine, you can ( apperently) get it at the chemists. You mix it with water and soak the grass in it I believe. Or you spray it over you're dio when finished. I read this in a feature on making tree's, but havn't tried it myself.

That's the ticket. Dry it. Then try it. Just like using herbs for foliage. Just seal it when done to keep it from browning. Please, try it and report back.

If it is a scale size, use it
If it turns brown, paint it.Or leave it brown to simulate winter cover... (++) (++)

Try spraying some of your clippings with gloss clear coat and dull coat, wait a week and see what happens. Just a thought.

you can dry it before you use it by placing the grass between the pages of an old phone book, and have it there for a long time; thus when you use it, it will not rot or loose its colour(maybe) thats what we did to some flowers in a school project.

If colour is lost then you can paint it in your dio. The only reason real grass is not used is because it will be tedious and difficult to cut it down to tiny pieces.

Once dry it is used just as static grass(I hope) I can't try it out because I don't have one of these wire things at home.

i have tried your method before, and it looks good for the first few days until everything starts getting brown . unless that is the look you are going for, of course.
