It occurred to me that I've never done anything heroic in my life. In fact when it comes to bravery I even have trouble spelling it. I'm a total coward.

An example was when I was still with my ex. We were walking down a road and a big rottweiller came running at us growling and trying to bite. I instinctively grabbed the ex and held her between me and the dog for protection until the owner managed to grab hold of the dog. Needless to say the ex was less than impressed with my actions but she didn't get bitten so no harm was done.

Does anyone else have any stories of their heroic cowardice in the face of danger?

Why do you think I joined the artillery - much easier to be brave when the other guy is 10 miles away!

Sounds like the ex was a bit of a Rottweiller herself, hence the dog not being able to bite her. Brilliant judgement call on your part, :-) Rottweillers terrify me!

There have been many studies into cowardice / courage, and the end is always the same. Nobody is either a hero or a coward continuously; circumstances dictate our actions!

Personally I believe cowards live longer! :-)

I had a guy pull a gun on me, and instead of facing him in a gentlemen's duel I knocked him down with my patrol car. Does that count?

Why is it if a woman pushes her husband infront of danger it's a natural and OK thing to do, but if a man does it then he's a coward. I thought this was the age of equality. If a ship is sinking it's women and children first.. and men have to be brave and wait to go down with the ship!! Am i crazy for thinking that is is unfair? Have we really become so expendable?I hope I haven't offended anyone!!!

well, let me tell you Kevin.. in my country women make just as much as men, if not more in some cases.. AND they have a better chance of being hired. BUT when it comes to the not-so-nice things.. they always pull the "well, you're the man" routine!! Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't help but feel that men are scr*&^%ed in this day and age. I know this is not inline with the so called "political correctness", but I have to honestly say it's the way I feel. Oh, well....

Almost right, Land Rover driver in the signals is beter. First day in my compangie the C.O. opens his welcome speech : I have good news, and bad news.
The good news is that the rayon vebindings comp. ( signals at about brigade level) will be approx. 15-20 miles away from the front. (cheer from new recruits).
The bad news is that we will be the first target in an attack, as the enemy will seek to elliminate our lines of communication. ( worried silence from new recruits).
As a Land Rover driver we were o.k. though, as we would just drive of in the opposite direction at the first sign of trouble :-)

Hmmm....well, I have a very, and I mean very irrational fear, and no one will ever guess it.... If you want a clue, pm me. And I truly mean you will never guess it! Oh, and as for the whole woman-man-equality thing, remember, chivalry isn't dead; it's just hiding. Thanks for your time.

I had a confrontation with a HUGE gopher snake last month.....ok it was a REALLY GIGANTICLY MONSTROUS gopher snake .....and it BIT my THUMB when I rescued it from our psycho katz.

My wife found it hilarious in the extreme when her big bad inner city type fire captain FLUNG that snake into a nearby oak tree and ran SCREAMING like a girl in the opposite direction at warp get away speed.

I however, find nothing funny about it. I had to take an aspirin and a nap in a cool quiet room. Away from snakes.

So there.

Cheers

Once as a little boy, i was bitten on the arm by a large dog while i was running for the ice cream truck .Now some 30+ years latter, i'm still frecked out by any dog roaming the streets alone.

Well, when i was a small boy i stuck my finger into a rat trap(the cage type) and got bitten by the rat. Ever since then I have had a fear of rats.
Also, all those times of being chased by dogs has made me terrified of them, even the small dogs.

I am of the opinion that a hero is simply a person who doesn't realize the gravity of his/her situation. I have done things that in retrospect I look back on and say, "Now why in heaven's name did you do that?" These aren't heroic things but rather things that a person who is scared out of their gourd just shouldn't be doing. Like staring down charging dobermans (one foaming at the mouth). I realized that I wasn't trying to be heroic, I just didn't know what else to do. Maybe I was so scared that I couldn't move, I don't know, but it wasn't in an effort to impress anyone. I think the difference between a "coward" and a "hero" is the hero just doesn't realize he could get killed.

On my 28th jump, 16th free fall, I had a parachute malfunction and never went back up. Chickened right the hell out I did.
