My home town of Roswell, New Mexico has its share of history, but not much that translates into model building.

Some 'Western' history took place in the area. Mostly during the Lincoln County Wars of Billy the Kid fame.

During the 1920s and '30s Robert H. Goddard flew and tested his (and the world's?) first liquid fueled rockets. Something the US Army wasn't interested, but many German scientists read his published works with keen interest.

It was the location of the 509th Bombardment Wing in the final stages of WWII and home to Bock's Car and, from what I hear, the Enola Gay. Later came the big B-36 Peacemakers and B-52s.

And of course the occasional flying saucer!!

I live in Leavenworth and work on Fort Leavenworth Kansas. Lots of outdoor history here, but most of it is from the early to mid-1800s. The Command and General Staff College's library, however, is a tremendous source of inspiration -- more military history books than you can imagine. I get lost in there for hours, then come out with way too many books to read and absorb. It's almost sensory overload ...

If I want to see the real hardware, I need to drive about two hours west to Fort Riley. I do, however, see occasional military aircraft overhead. The other day I was out in the backyard playing with the dog and a B2 bomber flew over low. It was in the area for a fly-over of the NASCAR race about 20 miles south of here.

I live in Kalamazoo MI, we have the Kalamazoo Air Zoo, which is a great place for static aircraft displays. Mostly of Viet Nam era jets, but some WWII planes too. If only I was an aircraft modeller. They do however have some WWII era German small arms and uniforms on display. There are a couple of M 48s, painted up in '80s MERDC camo outside the local VFW hall. Up the road a bit is the Battle Creek Air National Guard base, which has A 10s. And I'm in the Army National Guard in a MSE (Signal) unit, which once we get our gear back from Iraq ( mostly still on a ship somewhere) will give me as many pictures of lot's of M1036 and M998 model HMMWVs as I can take. I can also get as many pictures as my buddies will send me of OIF from a signal point of view as anyone wants.

Other than the occasional deuce and a half, five ton or humvee on the road, I don't get to see much ground equipment. However, we have the 439th MAW with its C-5A's at Westover, just across the river and the 104th TFW with its A-10's over a ridge line at Barnes ANG. Westover also regularly hosts C-130's, KC-10's, and the occassional P-3 Orion. There's a unit flying Blackhawks at one of the bases and my wife has seen U-2's heading into Westover, as well.

A couple of the V.F.W. halls around here have tanks in front of them. I think St. Helen has a Sherman, but I have not stopped to look at it and figure out which type. It might make a neat diorama to build a model one of them, complete with "Do not climb on tank" signs and people having a picnic next to it.

A long time ago, (25 years?) there was a jet plane on a pole at the Armory in Grayling. I am not even sure what it was. I think "Gate Guards" might be an interesting and challenging subject to model. THey would takesome weathering and scratchbuilding skills, as most of them have gutted cockpits, missing service panels, and lots of other missing or damaged parts. They could be mounted on prototypical bases, or gaudily painted poles with "Keep Off " signs attached.

I live a few miles from Edgewood Aresenal which has a pretty impressive armor museum. A lot of the pieces are in bad shape unfortunately, but there are quite a few restored ones like old Leopold here:

Hi,
As Faust Says, Holland did not change much....
I live in a village where most of the farms date back from around 1850...

I live in Dayton, Ohio "The Birthplace of Aviation", so I would say my town is great for inspiration.

Although I am more of a space modeler, Dayton offers quite a bit. We have the USAF Museum which contains spacecraft as well.

So if anyone needs any reference pics, by all means let me know. Any excuse to go to the museum is good for me. I am actually looking into volunteering to work in the restoration area. They only require 8 hours a week...
