I have watched many enjoyable movies and on the other hand many duds too.
It is regarded in many circles that Casablanca is The movie of all time.
I watched (again) it last weekend and I do love it.
Of the more recent films I would have to go for the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films.
As it is probably my favourite book(s) I am amazed that all the characters are virtually as I always imagined them when reading so it was very easy to get right into it without any "getting used to the characters" time.
Any others?
Cheers
Peter

Greetings, Peter...
Just read your post and I must agree that Casablanca is a wonderful flick...as far as the best of all time, I couldn't make that decision, personally...I am a movie buff myself, I don't spend much of my spare time on regular T.V. shows...would rather watch a good movie...I could list many, many, movies that I like to view again and again, both new and old..The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is an excellent account of the written stories, I fell in love with the series when I was young, and I must say that they did an excellent job re-telling the story on film...
Sincerely,
Gunny

How about "Citizen Kane"? Written by, directed by, produced by, and starring then 26 year old Orson Wells. On many a critics Top Ten list.

Citizen Kane used to always be the one picked by film critics. I like the movie, and can see why critics would love it, but I prefer Casablanca also. It's got it all, the love story, comedy, a little bit of war story. Just a really classic movie.
I'd hate to have to pick even my top ten films let alone the best of all time. I like the fact that so many of these lists are coming out with different genre, best western, best action movie, best sci fi movie, etc. It's very hard to lump all movies into one best of list.

Good call Tobar.
There are many oldies that come to mind.
What they lack these days in special effects they certainly shine with charm and that old essential ingredient...good acting.
Cheers

I was in college when I saw Casablanca for the first time (1975) It has and always will be to me the Greatest movie of all times, just as Bogie will be the greatest actor of all times. Funny thing critics ahave said his Treasure of the Sierra Madre was his best work. My favorite Bogie film (the one he hated making) is Sabrina and my favorite Duke film is Donavan's Reef
Of course throwing a few more truely great movies in the list
Citizen Kane
Gone with the WInd
Wizard of OZ
More recently
One flew Over the Coo-Coo's Nest
Godfather Trilogy
Lord of RIngs Trilogy

While I love Casablanca the LOTR trilogy, I'd have to go with "The Godfather" as being the best movie. Sweeping epic, deep, complex characters, superb cinematography. I can still remember sitting transfixed and wasted when the movie ended when I saw it the first time in May 1972. What's generally seen on TV now is a doctored and cleaned up cut that doesn't have the visceral impact of the theatrical release.

I have to agree with those who said the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and I would also add Ocean's Eleven to the mix.
What has always blown me away is how Peter Jackson went from directing ultra-low budget horror flicks like Bad Taste and Dead Alive to what is quite possibly the best shot series of movies ever made. I took a film class last semester and we analyzed some of the shots in The Two Towers and Fellowship of the Ring. We came to the conclusion that they were all almost perfect, or perfect, from an aesthetic/artistic point of view.

LOTR is on my top list also. Excellent. The original 3 star wars would be high up also. Probably my top film would be "scent of a woman". Mr. Al was perfect .... WhooHaa! Some brilliant lines, good story, and a good laugh at times as well!
I have always been a fan of the original exorcist. No horror ever surpassed this ... and its still great today!
Recent film I liked was "Angelas ashes" ... brilliant book as well. Robert carlyle and Emily watson put on a great show and their accents did them proud! Very moving film.

Because of the title of this site, I thought this post would relate to war movies. Therefore, if you want a really good war movie, I reccoment 'Paths of Glory' starring Kirk Douglas and directed by Stanley Kubrik (sp?). It has a very clear message against all war. While it's an older BW film, the anti-war message comes through clearly and not one frame of that movie is wasted!

Hmmm....also hard to pick. So I will go with the movie that inspired me the most, Star Wars. Star Wars re-wrote the definition of movies in 1977. And in conjunction with other Lucas and Spielberg movies that would follow (like Raiders) it laid the foundation for all the modern movies we love.
But hey I still enjoy a good classic too. Sad that eighties movies are now being called classics. Ack!

LOTR would be one of the greatest achievements in film history in a sense that it should be impossible to film. But the best movie ever...
I have to go for Sergio Leone´s epics Once Upon A Time in America and Once Upon A Time in the West.
The first one is pretty close neighbour to Godfather, part II while it draws a life-long time span inside one film. Talk about character development!
And the latter offers simply the most perfected moments of filmmaking when picture and music track become one. Not to mention the powerful, bigger-than-life storyline.
My two cents.

Lord of the rings for sure, but how about Galdiator and Bravehart? Saving Private Ryan was awesome as well. And I can not leave out the Star Wars triology.
