and then the magazine disappeared.....

The magazine is still around. Still as interesting as ever. They've even got a website http://www.militarymodelling.com/pages/index.cgi .

I think from this post 2 things are clear:

1. We would all like to see more kits in our specific interests, e.g. I would like to see more WW2 Commonwealth (specifically Sefrican) and more medieval kits.

2. The kit manufacturers are not listening to their customers... US!!! The modellers! Therefore it's time we speak up and tell them what WE want, instead of sitting around griping about the same ol' same ol' that is dished out to us.

Well, that's my 2 cents worth... time for a

Actually, Keenan was talking about Military Modeller and not Military Modelling. I remember that magazine when I was young. Well ,up until the 80's when I was living in the States. I agree with Tarok in voicing our desires. Is there a way that we can do that.. other than just sending e-mails cause I don't really think any attention is given to sporadic e-mails. I know Revell Germany's Home page has a feature I think it's called model of your dreams or something like that where you tell them what you would like to see in the future. Hope they take that into consideration. I personally would like to see more trucks, recovery vehicles, bridge layers, and maybe a few civilian cars for dioramas (In plastic so they can be affordable). I don't think I'd pay $80 for a resin auto kit in 1/35.

4) The 'net is going to cripple the conventional magazines. One has already gone in the U.K. and more will follow...

Great points Jimbrae. Have to agree with all of them, especially the above! Over the last year all of the hobby shops in Stockholm have stopped carrying the most common magazines. Military modelling, Military in scale, etc. They have gotten too expensive, half full of advertisements, and there are better, or at least equal, quality articles on Armorama and all over the net free. I bought 3 magazines in january for one article each. The two above and modelcraft international (?). I paid more than $20 for the three, and when I flicked through them, I was ... disgusted. Even the articles I was interested in, were well below par! I made up mind that day, and never bought a magazine since.

think everybody favors their own country, cause I've seen the British have been wanting more of their own armour, and Americans want more US armor, it is just a patriotic thing to do, to support your own country.

Ciao Jim,
No, we don't need another Panther or German set outside of Stalingrad or Kursk! We need Greeks, Polish, French and Italian subjects! We need variety! I want variety!
Whew, thanks for listening. I feel better.
Ciao for now

yeah, what about those whose countries have no armor, or their armor is not in plastic? who do you support then with your modeling? Instead of that you model what you see in the hobby shop

I also have noticed that you can get better articles on the net that in those magazines.

By example; in some magazines every aspect of modelling is covered, from ships to aircraft, but I only like armor so that leaves me with only two articles, and then I find out that these articles are just journals of how they built their kit, and what you get, nothing of value!!! that's for $8.99

while here at armorama I can not only read articles, but also show my work and discuss other's work too, with people from all over the world for free! ,now, could it be any better? maybe this is the golden age of modelling !!

Speaking of re-releases, looks like Tamiya are re-releasing their Pink panther and LRDG Chevy, just bought them (as new) and the boxes are way too new to be second hand.

Well if the re-releases are making so much money, how come Italeri is not re-releasing their M7 Priest, M107, M108, M109 or M110 kits? Why re-release their Panzer IV F1 / F2, don’t we have enough Panzer IVs and it really wasn’t that good? Glad to see they are re-packaging and re-releasing a bunch of ESCI stuff, but why re-release ESCI’s 1/48 F-86 E Sabre?

Zvezda takes re-packaging serious, just look at their Panzer III Ausf F. They took Dragon’s kit, added some new parts, decals for three vehicles and changed the kit into an Ausf F.

Do we need another Tiger or Panther? Personally, I don't. I have one Tamiya Tiger 1 and three DML Panther kits. That's out of a stash of about 150 armor kits.

I like Pz1's, Pz11's, Pz111's, Pz1V's and all the assualt guns and Panzerjagers built on theses chassis.

If that wasn't enough I also like Shermans, Stewarts, Crusaders.....ad infinitum. If it's WW11 I want to build it.

As for Tamiya, I don't think they're in any trouble. Tamiya is big time into radio controled items and models may only be 10 or 15 per cent of what they sell.

New CNC machining and EDM technology makes the manufacture of injection molds quicker and cheaper to much improved accuracy standards.

After reading this thread, I started looking at all the kits on the shelves behind me and thinking about how much the selection, and detail, of kits has expanded since I built my first Tamiya kit in 1971.

It is truely a good time to be an armor modeler. I love it.

Excuse the ramble, I've got a hole in my brain and the cat scan to prove it. I just hope I can stick around long enough to build some of these great kits.

When I started this thread, I must admit that I had second thoughts about it. I thought that it would quickly degenerate into another of these tedious Allied vs. Axis debates - however, what has come across, is an incredible sense that a large number of modellers on this site will build subjects according to what interests them - not tied down by nationality...

The last comment was also interesting - I can't really see myself building a Tiger or Panther, however I could definitely see myself as building a 251 or a 38(t) ...

Currently on my workbench, I have no less than 2 (large-scale) German figures - this period's current obsession being cold-weather gear....

In conclusion, a fascinating debate - the level of response has been well-considered, courteous and thoughtful.... This is one of the reasons this site works as it does...Jim

methinks its the current thots of the modeler that dictates what he/she buys, as for the market, i am on vietnam era, and will eventually transfer thots back to ww2 i reckon.

be nice if i had a survey to mfg of models that to show what i wanted, or would like to see, not just a rerelease, but an updated version, etc..

or info for old conversions, and yes i am still looking for that elusive m578, missed one by one day on bids from ebay.germany...

we all have our wants and needs so will just keep lookin here and learning from ya all
