I translate american movies and shows into arabic for Showtime Arabia. I'm working on an episode of JAG which is full of flight terminology.. can anyone help me?
thay're supposidly flying a Pulse Detonation Wave Aurora plane and they say the following in various situations:
We've got an "R" light
We've got an "M" light
we're still over bingo fuel
OPSEC level one Alpha
ICS spike and bypass doors stable
ECM panel
Post gyration departure
The ADS is stable.
Is ENBITER just another word for a comm. set?
Hope somebody can help me out

Hello Hisham,
I only know two of your list, but hey....better than nothing!!
Bingo fuel = the remaining amount of fuel which is needed to reach the home base...so if you exceed bingo fuel, you HAVE to divert to a nearer base.
ECM = Electronic Counter Measures, all kinds of electronic gadgets, needen to interfere hostile tracking radar systems...
HTH, John.

Hi,
I've got in front of me the "Aviation Language - A compendium of aeronautical subjects" that is the official book of terms used in the Civil Aviation and distributed to the Alitalia flight personnel.
Unfortunately none of the terms you mentioned are reported and the only one I know is ECM that stands for Electronic Counter Measures but I'm not sure that it suits your context.
R is the standard abbreviation for Right and it's listed but no clue for "M"...
Ciao

Actually, Electronic counter measure sound right cause they're flying a mission over North Korea and later on in the show they are targeted by missiles. Thank you for helping.

Thanks a lot, rebel, these URLs helped me lot. And they will come in handy for future translation projects. Thanks again. What part of Texas are you at. My older brother is a doctor living in Houston.

OPSEC = Operational Security. I guess as stated it is at the 1 A level. The way we were taught, to use OPSEC was to keep quiet about your job. All military practice OPSEC.

As military aircrew I suspect that a number of these terms are fiction. The Aurora is supposedly a high flying ramjet reconnaisance aircraft that was a possible successor to the Blackbird. There were a number of possible sightings of "wierd pulsed or puffed contrails". No official information seems to exist so does the plane exist? Is it another skunkworks special? Who knows? The explainations for Bingo, Comsec, Opsec and ECM are correct. The rest are probably made up for TV. ICS usually means integrated communication systems and ADS is an aerial delivery syystem. M light could be a middle marker light on an instrument landing system. Bypass doors could be used to allow more / less air into an engine to prevent surges, although this would usually be more appropriate in a compressor based jet turbine engine not a ramjet. Post gyration departure? Perhaps a roll through atmosphere much like the Space Shuttle does? Most of these don't seem to be in context though. Oh well
