For those of you who have not heard of this uprising it was a 63-day long struggle of Polish Home Army against the Nazi occupants in the city of Warsaw. The uprising started on August 1st 1944 and was supposed to last only 30 days, during which Russian Army (stationed across the river Wisła, only 1 KM from the city) was supposed to come into the city and help liberate it. Instead 30 days turned into 60 days, the Russian Army did not come into the city (a political move no doubt). Ultimately the uprising failed and 190,000 people (mostly civilians) were killed. If you would like to know more about this uprising feel free to check out the Warsaw Uprising 1944 website.

Also, if you want a truly comprehensive discussion of the uprising from roots in 1939 to it's postwar outcomes, check out "Rising '44" by Norman Davies. It goes into exhaustive detail about just about every detail of the heroic but ultimately doomed fight by the Polish Resistance.

War Machine,

I second that, 'Rising 44' is an excellent book!
