Why do some kits get out of production? Like Italeri's Sherman Calliope?

I think the major reason would be lack of interest in the models and maybe because of the old tooling on some of these kits.

i think they make so many.
like a million or so then they.
then get out of production.
but sometimes comapnys bring them back.
like tamyia just re-issued a whole lot of older,
stuff like the half track and the m-8 howztier,
i hope Italeri brings back the Sherman Calliope.
we should start a petttion started to
get Italeri to bring back the Sherman Calliope

Most likely because it wasn't a big seller when it was released. I remember in 1996 when the calliope was released, they just sat on shelves. Same deal with the DML M4A1, it did not sell well originally.

DML saturated the market with many new Sherman tank kits and Tamiya produced the M4 Early at the same time. There were too many "cooler" Shermans released at the same time.

Of course, now many of the rare Shermans are the ones that did not sell well like the DML M4A3 HVSS 76(w), M4A1, Italeri M4A2 Jumbo, Italeri Calliope are highly sought after because they did not get a lot of sales.

ever noticed if a new tool kit by another company comes out onto the market Tamiya has a knack of rolling out their old one at the same time or just before .
but also they bring out the kits in phases
a due to help preserve the molds as they want them to last a good few years also it helps sell the kit. how amny of you have bought a few older kits when they have been re-realsed jst in case you cant get them for a few years. It's just good marketing buy limiting the amount they always ensure pretty good results in shifting the kit

This happens a lot in model railroading :

A company announces a new product that has been requested quite a bit. They have only produced a set number of kits. This allows them to set a higher price because of the "short" supply. After the kits sell out they wait a few years and re-release the kits again at a higher price. I hate it when they do this because if you don't have the cash to get one right away, you are out of luck. This has created a new hobby for me. I go to different shops looking to stock up on items at the old prices.

I hope plastic models are not going to go this way too.

The law of supply and demand. If there is no demand there is no point in building up a large supply. Check on ebay and see if you can fid it at a reasonable price, though I bet this one will eventually be re-released
