Hi guys, well you can add me to the mix.

I have got back into 1/72 scale modelling in 2000, built my first kit in about 1973 ( airfix hurricane ) with my dad,
it was then a regular thing till about '85. I then went to the SAAF for 5 years, then Tech, got a job and was heavily involved in cricket and hockey. How quickly priorities change !

After getting a proper house in 2000 was walking through Century City in CT saw a modeling shop and bought a couple of kits on the spur of the moment. Now it is about 300 plus 1/72 aircraft kits and about 50 odd 1/72 armour kits in the stash with about 50 built !

I am really glad to be into it again as I find it quite theraputic.

Most of my kits I get from Jeffrey Stein, Thom's hobby haven and the normal toy stores. Also MDF & The Aviation shop.

I learnt about this site from George Winship's email yesterday, so I thought I would signup.

So hello modeliing world

Lets hope this post is in the right spot

Hi Crotale

Welcome to the big A, this is definitely the right place for this post. You might also want to copy and paste this post into the introductions forum. I can say without a doubt the interational lads & lasses would like to meet all our new members.

I have given up on using the LHS after finding Hobbyeasy and Luckymodel. The prices are just so much better and the variety is obviously somewhat vaster. Even with the international air postage the prices are better .

Once again, welcome aboard.

Howzit everyone. Good to see some guys from SA. I am from Amanzimtoti just south of Durb's. Great forum. I am into 1/35 Armour. Good hobby shops are hard to find here. Being jobless doesnt help either.

See you all around.

Keep well.

Hi There,

New member from Secunda. I've been modelling for awhile, mostly 1/35 armor and 1/48 Helicopters. I also fly scale R/C Helis and race 1/8 R/C buggies.

Nice to see SA guys!

Thanks for all the welcomes!

I was visiting the East Rand today, and founf Grand Prix hobbies in K9 centre near east rand mall. They have very nice kits!

Am I right to think that the best quality kits is SA is Tamiya and Academy? They also have Trumpeter and Dragon, but I do not know if these are good kits. I just know that IMHO Italeri sucks the big one. (++)

I am bust at the moment with an Italeri UH-1N Huey (I like helis too) and the kit is really bad quality. Bad details and bad fit.

Hi Hyper7

Dragon and Trumpeter are far superior kits to Tamiya and Academy, they are just not as well known. The Tamiya kits were great in their day, many years ago, but they are now somewhat dated, as Tamiya insists on re-releasing them without upgrading the moulds. One of Tamiya's advantages is that they make kits no one else seems interested in, like some WW2 Allied stuff, which lends itself fairly well to converting to WW2 South African...

My recomendation before spending your cash on a kit (as we all know, modelling is not cheap in SA ), would be to check out the News and Review sections and also search or browse the relevant Forum before making any purchase. If you don't find any info or posts, don't be afraid to ask advice... folks here will gladly try to help any fellow modeller...

Why not pop on into the Introductions forum and give all the folks a "Howzit"...

Hi guys

Thought I would share with you an interesting product I found for making latex or rubber moulds. It is called President Soft Putty and is used by dentists for making impressions of teeth.

This stuff is great no mess no fuss, simply take two equal parts of the putty mix together and you have rubber a couple of minutes later. The texture is great and the detail of the impression that it leaves is excellent.

It is available from companies that sell dental products and I believe a company called Millners Dental Supplies which is country wide supplies it, bit expensive though, 600g goes for R 639.00 but then there is no mess so no wastage. Maybe somebody has contacts with dentists that can get it at a better price.

Cheers
Dave
