Let's talk about hobby related injuries.

I had an X-Acto knife roll on me desk and hit me head - fortunately, the distance wasn't great enough for it to accelerate. I did feel the point prick my head though.

Then there's that time the knife slipped through my hands - CTS attack - and it fell down down down to my right foot like a PGM. Ouch.

Then there's the time that I was sawing something. Stupid me - my finger was on the way - so I made a relatively deep cut with the saw.

Then there's that time I ruined my office barong because a part with CA glue got stuck to it. At least, my health wasn't under threat - but my barong is now long gone.

And then there's the very recent incident of superglue (how recent - a few minutes ago). I was using CA glue as filler, and in my impatience, I was blowing the part with CA glue dry. Well, I managed to "kiss" the part - getting CA glue on me lips. I had to tear it away - and so now, I can't close my lips for they hurt after having the skin peeled off (pucker your lips like a fish - that's how I look right now).

I feel GiB. Had a quite a few like that myself.
Being a doctor, yung physical injuries they'll heal in time. What usually worry about are long term chemical effects. Nakabasa na ko ng article sa hyperscale regarding about those things. But hey! My love for this hobby is enough to overcome any pain, d b?

Mashaket yun! Of all places, sa labi pa! Grabe yan....I pray for the speedy replacement of the skin cells involved...

GI: Acetone dissolves superglue thus preventing to forcibly peel off the affected area

Hello Fellow IPMS BAC Guys:

As for me,I've not so much worried about hobby knife during my modelling sessions. What I am worried about is the spray fumes.I am so paranoid about it's effect is that I spray my kit inside a spray booth placed also outside our terrace which is open air and I am also wearing a respirator. My formula of safety is spray booth+open air+respirator. As for the glue;I position an electric fan over my safe to direct away the smell of the glue because it sucks.

Buck: Yep. Plans are on hold because of that unfortunate accident hehehehe Oh Joanna, where art thou?

Flex: The thought of using acetone came late - I had already peeled away the glue with some skin attached. I still look like a fish hehehe. As for chemical fumes and impotence, last time I checked the mechanism works fine hehehe (this coming from a guy who has built and painted models in a small room, windows closed, no ventilation, no mask, several times for years hehehehe)

Sphynx: Nice tip for that knife. Methinks me do that too (then again, where's the thrill? hehehe)

haven't had a serious physical accident/s while doing my sessions, the bad thing is, i smoke while airbrushing or while i'm assembling the parts. The funny part is, ill put on my mask while spraying, then after the air brush, ill follow it up with a cigarette while assessing the paint work. Theres this one time i got really disoriented due to the fumes and cigs, may hinahanap akong part and hindi ko talaga makita, yun pala nakabulagta na sa harapan ko!!!

besides that, typical cuts due to cutters/knives. and yes damn super glue. kala mo may paltos ka pag natuyo sa fingers mo.

Long term exposure to hazardous chemicals are worse. Orange colors be it oil, enamel whatever contain cadmium, a material found to cause cancer according to the State of California. That's just one color with heavy metals. Almost all paint are now lead free or have very tolerable traces. Then the fumes from spraying or even drying the paint.

But what really bug me is the "office barong". What color is that man? Last time I wore barong was when I left for college. We always wore them for the first friday of the month for First Friday Mass at school. Now at a very formal office setting here abroad. I am the only employee who seems to get away wearing t-shirt and a pony tail.

When one Filipino guy sported a barong to office, the rest of the Fil guys here called him Ginoo for the whole week.

Office barong in question is colored grayish tan. One of my better barongs. Now a mess.

Wahehehe.... that chest pain is the most frequent thing that happens to me. Basta wag ka lang magspray indoors. Grabe, parang bigla nga akong nilagnat pagkatapos eh

That's why I use a Maped knife. Slightly cheaper than an Xacto. Uses the same blades. Big comfortable plastic body with a metal core. Comes with a blade cover. And it has ridges on one end to prevent from rolling off the table and hitting the family jewels. Nalapag ko kasi sa box tapos yung ridges over the edge pala. Ayun gumulong. Mabigat yun!

Di na ako pwede mag-lacquer ngayon unless I want to get an FLK aka Funny Looking Kid this October.

Welcome Tommy Gun!

Most of my model mishaps are with CA glue getting on my fingers, welding it to the plastic parts (luckily I've got acetone at the ready).

There were times I did get pricked by the needle whenever I jam it in the CA glue nozzle to unclog it. It slipped and homed in on my finger.

Dito with the x-acto whenever I try to cut or trim excess sprue and the sprue was tough and the blade slipped and cut me instead.

Would you believe it, thin paper, if you run the edge along your skin can cut you too. Happened to me with the edge of sandpaper (on my dry skin).

guys,
instead of the deadly rolling x-acto, you can just buy a scalpel (surgery knife). the handle is flat and wont roll off the table and it will me much more sharper and its sterile!
i dont use x-acto anymore because i got a life time supply of scalpel and bledes, courtesy of my hospital!!! :-) :-) :-)

If I had a lifetime supply of scalpels, I don't think I'd b doing models with it. I'll think about 1001 ways to use a scalpel with. First one, go to my boss's office with and evil grin....

ako yata I ruined 2 of my best jeans sa CYno, several battle scars sa OLFA art knife... had this cutter since 1990 heheh-dala ko pa rin sa Qatar during my stint as a Architectural modelmaker tapos dinala ko pa dito sa Canada... so may signs na rin nang battle damage.
