Just signed up and thought I would introduce myself. I'm 42, have been building models of one sort or another since my teens...mostly narrow-gauge railroad type stuff (scratch and kits, HO and O) but in the last 4 or 5 years I have drifted back into the static plastic scene due to the excellent kits/add-ons now available and the inspiration provided by sites like this. I don't limit myself to military subjects only as I tend to get distracted easily. One thing I really need to improve is my build speed tho....I'm really really slow! With spring just around the corner bench time will drop of somemore because of motorcycling and back-yard mechanic type stuff.

I just started dabbling in card-models because I can work on them at work during lunch. Anyhow, I'll probably lurk alot, that's my nature. I have signed up for the Incoming campaign so I'll at least try to keep up with posting my progress on the 10.5 cm German WW2 howitzer I selected.

From the Great White North,
P. "Bugbrains" Berghs
Calgary

ps: posted some pic's of my workshop and last model in my gallery.

hi Bugbrains,
welcome to ARMORAMA, the best modelling site in the universe :-) we are glad to have you here. So good you are also with us in the INCOMING campaign.
Your Tamiya Honda is very well built. (or it was Kawasaki :-))I have an unbuilt old Tamiya Yamaha Virago with driver kit and it is one of my favorites.
best regards

Hello and welcome! Glad to see you found this site. I don't think building speed should be an issue, since this is supposed to be a hobby and not a contest (unless you choose to enter one). Whatever speed you're most comfortable with is the speed you should build at. Rushing only leads to problems, mistakes, and longer building times because of the fixes necessitated by haste. Take your time and enjoy your craft!
Also, don't be shy about asking questions around here. The folks on this site are only here to help, encourage, and give friendly advice. They will do anything and everything they can to help you out.
By the way, I don't know if you're a hockey fan, but even though I live down here in Washington State, my favorite team is the Calgary Flames. It looks like my Flames might just get back in the playoffs this year! Maybe this year we can break our first round losing jinx that started after we won the cup in '89.
See you around!

Hi Keefe,

Massachusetts would be a looong commute!

I have not used the lathe for a couple of months but it does come in handy sometimes. I'm saving up some funds to get a compatible milling machine and tooling with the long-term goal of building large scale engine models...stuff like navy tri-plex steam engines and radials.

If you need something turned for a project and have drawings let me know,

PB

Thanks PB... looks like you'll be busy for awhile, but I do have a couple hundred 1/35th scale mortar tubes that I need to get turned out... :-) Do you have any CNC capabilities? You see, I have this job as a CAD designer with about $60k worth of software installed, and well... ah... um... nevermind.

Nice to have you on board! Have a blast here!

Howdy Bugbrains: I am heading to Calgary in next few weeks, could you fill me in on which shops I should visit while I am there eh? And Kevin, everyone should say eh! Encourage all your friends, be the first on your block to say it. Especially while driving your caw to Harvawd Yawhd.

Well, it is difficult to drive a cah to Havard Yahd because it's tough to find a pahkin' spot. Narrow streets... too many tight cawnas. Not too wicked pissa if ya ask me.... eh?

Hi Bison44

Here is a list of the hobby shops I skulk around in (I assume you are looking for plastic kits).

PM Hobbycraft 2020B 32'nd Ave ...will open their new location March 25, a few doors west of the current loction , its going to be huge! They have plastic, trains, R/C boats, cars planes. No PE or Resin detail parts. Good source for casting materials. Best prices I've seen so far in town.

If you are in this area just around back is Ken's Gems.18 2219 35 Ave NE...a very good source for jewelery tools files, pliers etc.

Uncle Bill's Models Down in the basement at 2 117 17 Ave NE All plastic, mostly planes and armor, some PE and Resin. Some pre-owned kits. Good prices if you haggle or buy more than one kit.

Phoenix Comics 2523A 17 Ave Sw Good selection of plastics, Sci-fi/comic figures and Gundam stuff. Lots of military PE and resin accesories. Ask one of the staff to pull it out for you...its not sorted well so you need to dig through the file boxes. This is my favorite shop since they also sell vinyl records and alternative music Cd's. It is also close to the Naval Museum of Alberta where I volunteer. We have a good collection of naval guns, pictures, memorabilia and 3 restored Naval Airplanes (in the building). The research library is very good if you are working on a ship model. Our current project is a large diorama of one portion of Juno Beach.

I also shop at Hobby City #10, 250 Crowfoot Crescent NW because it is real close to home. It is a small shop but he does have some kits and Valejo brush paints. Not worth the trip except if you live close by or are trveling to the NW outskirts.

Chinook/Hobby West has planes, trains and military kits but is going to die-cast and GI-Joe stuff more and more. I have not been there in quite a while.

Model Land 3409A 26'th Street is mostly RC but they also have a large amount of plastics, best selection of model ships in town. No PE or Resin. Prices are fairly high

Hope this helps,

Bugbrains :-)
