This will be slightly off topic but while you mentioned the great sniper battles of Stalingrad, there is a lingering doubt about the existence of the German sniper. Apparently no German record mention any sniper guru of that name(!). And them Krauts are so anal with regards to their records kaya nga maraming Nazi ang nabitay sa Nurenberg. The name of that german Major only exists in soviet records and propaganda. Hmnn?!? But Comrade Yaitsev still killed hundreds and lived to tell about it. That fact is already greater than fiction.

Balik tayo sa Bataan, I say balme it all on the Brass. Either na shock sila sa turn of events or what but right after the first bombs fell on Dec 8, 1941 (12/7 EST) walang decisive plan of defense na nagawa. And what hair brained idea ba naman to retreat into a peninsula! What were they really hoping for? Cross to Corregidor? Corregidor on the other hand is an 18th century tactic applied in a 20th century war.

One more sad note. We all know that ML Quezon got in the sub with the Big Mac to Australia. But how many knows that that magic carpet ride was paid in Philippine funds to the tune of 500,000 mega bucks! That's a big KACHING!!! to MacArthur, he later used the money for his bid for the White House which he lst to Ike.

MacArthur was hoping to hold out unti reinforcements from the US arrives. He did not expect Washington to assume a "Europe First" policy. That ruined his strategy.

As for the Commonwealth bankrolling Quezon's evacuation, where did you get this info?

Yup! The US forces were indeed disregarded in the early phase of the war. It was only after Midway that the US became aggressive with the PTO.

The note on Quezon paying for his sub ride to Australia was taken from a book written by a US staff officer in Australia. I wish I wrote down the title of the book and its author but i did'nt. I believe that either Max Soliven or Teddy Benigno mentioned this in their columns in Philstar back in the 90's. Also it was never mentioned that the Commonwealth paid for the trip. As soon as I can find that book again I will post exerpts from it. But again the author may have been some R.E.M.F. who has some gripes with MacArthur, and he has enemies a-plenty.

I am stirring up mud in our history, but then again it's one of the reasons why we are so interested with it.

The trun of events in the first Philippine campaign still has a lot of grey areas and even us historians who have a vast collection of info and sources from all three sides (US, Fil and Japanese) still dig up a lot of stuff up to now.

I am tempted to reply to some of your comments but I'll hold back for now... Let's see where this discussion goes....

I wouldn't put my last peso on it either. But I just find the idea very interesting.
Anyways, didn't Quezon bring some funds to Australia allegedly to procure weapons for our guerillas. This could be the same money that that guy was referring to....
