Hi all,
rather than packing tiny nose weights into aircraft, I've been pondering...if it might be sensible to melt the bob weights down and mould them into a bar or rod. Then a piece can be simply cut of and shaped a bit, for the job.
I wondered if any of you have done this?

I was thinking of trying to find a cast iron pot and sticking it on the b-b-q. I was thinking of plastecine....(play doh) to make a simple mould?

Any advise please?

I don't know about the play-do. Molten lead gets pretty hot and may dry the Play Do to the point where it lights on fire. Either that, or the moisture in the Do is going to boil off when you pour your mold and you will end up with a sputtering mess. I would like a mold out of RTV if it was me.

I used to make lead sinkers for fishing by melting scrap lead over a gas cooker and using a pototoe which was hollowed out to the size I wanted as a mold. Spud lasted 20 odd sinkers.

my dad is a fisherman, and like roo he makes lead weights.

he uses one of those butane gas torches to melt lead sheet in to a mold made from either wood or rubber.

I've done it by a mold formed from many layers of aluminum foil as both a crucible and mold. Just be careful.

I'm surprised nobody yet mentioned clay. Sculpt a mould out of some clay (or Das,...) let it harden and you have a lead pouring mould that is reusable about 100 times .

Oh, and if you are melting lead, I would highly recommend that you do it outside. The fumes that come off of that stuff are not good for you at all, esp. kids...
