That is seriously cool looking! Any idea what the 'legs' are for, some kind of stabilizers?

Yes, I really did know that one Tread. I think I first saw that about a year ago. Pretty cool,
these behemoths.

Now, did you know that the U.S. had one too?

It's the 14-Inch M1920!

Tread, any details on that gun? That shield makes it look very much like a naval weapon. I wonder if this was lifted off a ship?

whilst i cant offer any pics at the moment,

most of the railway guns, particularly WW1 ones, were indeed naval guns mounted on railway carriages.
ive seen pics of US and French ones

cheers

I'm all in favor of an artillery group build. Simple rules:
* Must be capable of (and been primarily used for) indirect fire.

This allows for the SPA pieces of WW2 (Hummel, Wespe, Bishop, Priest, SU-76, etc), all artillery pieces, and mortars, while excluding AT guns (Flak 36, DS-3, etc), and artillery pieces mounted as direct fire weapons (ISU-152, etc)

What do you think? Can we get enough people together to make it interesting?

Tread,

The US Army had a significant number of rail mounted coastal artillery guns up thru WW2. They would have seen use if the Japanese Navy had shown up along the US West Coast. If I recall correctly, they had pre-surveyed turn tables for the guns. Just pull/push the gun onto the turn table, compute and lay in firing data, and BOOM!!! They could then be relocated relatively quickly to avoid counter battery fire.

Naval air power put the end to most US coastal artillery!

Howdy Fellas,

I really like the idea of an Artillery Group Build! I've actually got a couple of projects going at the moment that might fit into that. I've got a long-term project going depicting Brecourt manor with German 88's. I also have a Long Tom (but unfortunately Istole the wheels for something else. And I also have a secret project for the T2K '04 Campaign.
Would you guys like me to start one up? Or would one of you prefer to do it?

Also, if I'm going to really think about entering a NEW artillery piece into this GB, I'm going to have to confer with my good friend Gunnie about potentially building THIS!!

Now THAT's an artillery dio! :-)

This is Atomic Annie Gun #9, firing the only Live test round ever fired. It was a 15 Kiloton nuclear artillery round, fired at the top secret Nevada test site on May 25, 1953.

Howdy Kenc,

Many thx for the reminder on the American versions of the Railgun. You are absolutely right my friend! In fact, here's another one.

Pretty nice huh?

How many of us knew about these guns?

Howdy Tony-Frey,

You were asking about the application and 'deployment' of those "legs" on the Russian rail gun in the first post.
Below is an early photo of that very same rail gun in it's 'deployed' position.

Hope that answers your question

This here is "Obuhov". That's not the fully official name but to my knowledge these old Finnish 12" coastal guns are nicknamed to just that.

Some specs:

305 mm (12") 52 caliber coastal gun, model Obuhov:

Caliber: 305 mm
Length of the barrel: 52 cal.
Range: over 40 km
Rate of the fire: 0.5 rounds/min
Weight of the shell: 450 kg

Taken from Guns of Krepost Sveaborg. (there's more cannons there )

I've seen one of these in real life. That was on the fortress island of Örö where they still have one pretty much fully restored. The gun at Örö differs from the Sveaborg gun so that there's a big bunker maze built under it and the part where most of the men are in the picture (the back portion) was like a room inside the bunker, reminding me of a solid housing for a large crane. Pity that I seem to be unable to find any pictures of that particular cannon.

Now- now boys, lets not forget the German 'Paris Gun' of WW1.

Designed by Krupp’s Professor Rausenberger

Caliber: 210mm / 240mm
Length of the barrel: 46m in total (40m rifled + 6m smoothbore extension)
Range: over 130 km
Muzzle velocity: 1600 m/second (±Mach 5)
Weight of the projectile: 94kg (increasing per numbered shell)
Weight of the propellant: 209kg
Barrel life: 65 rounds
Total weight: 256 tons (the barrel alone weighted 145 tons)

Info taken from Louis Wildenboer’s speech "The Paris Gun" on 12th October 2000.

Thanks for the pic, Tread, and all the other great pics, everyone. Forgot all about the Paris gun.

I would really like to participate in a artillery group build. Would scale matter? I have a little project planned in 1/76 that I think would fit in. I do have some choices in 1/35 too, if the braille scale is a no-no.

Treadhead,
If you want to setup the parameters for a group build, be my guest. Since we're all posting photos, here are some that I took at Aberdeen in '98...

My favorite artillery piece, the Soviet B-4:

The K5:

And finally, a rocket launcher:

Enjoy!

Hey all!

If it's started up, it would be the 1st groop build for me, sounds great!

Also, while watching the History Channel last night, I saw the "First Railroad Gun" that was used by the Union army against Petersburg in 1864. It was nothing more than a Howitzer on a train dolly. But they used the same way to fire as most other RR Guns...just find a bend in the track.

Italeri has a nice little model of the same gun (minus the dolly) in 1:72. Hum....

Quite possibly HalfYank, the russian were known for reaching into their naval inventory for cross-aaplication purposes. Cas in point is their TD artillery 100mm BS-3, which they stole from the Russian Navy .

Howdy Fellas,

I also really like the idea of an Artillery Campaign. It would be a FIRST for Armorama, since there isn't even a catagory for 'Artillery' in the Campaign Listings. But, and this is a big 'BUT', after recent events on the Warship side of the site, and also realizing how much work is involved in even getting a 'Campaign' on the dockets when there is a catagory for it. This would most probably be a GROUP BUILD, and not a Campaign.
So...with that firmly in mind. If there is still sufficient interest in a 'Heavy Arty' GROUP BUILD...let me know, and I'll try to put something together.
How's that sound?

Tread.
