I'm not sure, but I was adding weathering when I was a kid back in the early 60's ! I think modelers have always added this realistic look to there models. But I also think that us modelers have reached a point where we demand it out of ourselves to add as much realism to our work as posible.

I agree with Garry. Most modelers I knew in the late 60s, early 70s, did at least SOME weathering. Nothing to the elaborate lengths people go to now. It's gotten to the point that if a model isn't weathered to within an inch of its life; it's pretty much ignored.

I,ve read an article about weathering and it seems that they copied techniques from oil paintings which have been round for hundreds of years no doubt styles for "aging" fakes ect
made the cross over I cant remember were I read it but there we go

The old Challenge Publication "Military Modeller" was featuring a lot of this by the late 70's. IMHO, much of this was overdone but it was the only mainstream magazine many of us had. I think what happened next is that a lot of people used that as a reference and tried to replicate this, then a next generation tried to emulate them and the cult of overweathering took on a life of its own, so much so that the RRB often contains the comment "add more mud." Again, IMHO, some weathering is good. Less is a lot better. Whllie we can find pictures of mudbogged vehicles, there are more of dusty rather than mud soaked that show up.
Anyway, that's my take on it.

Tamiya actualy marketed a "weathering" mix back in the 70's in the small Pactra type bottles. I bought a couple of the bottles back in 73 when I lived in Japan.

The techniques have evolved and changed but the concept goes back as far as I can remember - into the 70's

For me it started at same time I started to paint models, back in early 70's.
