Hello Everyone!

I was wondering what everybody uses for gun straps on their figures. I am looking for something better than foil as I find it too delicate. Any ideas?

thanks

Evergreen makes a sheet styrne that is .005" thick (0.13MM) it is very paper thin and is very flexable. I think this coud be cut into strips and used for sling material. I use it for mud flaps, tie down straps etc.

I use drafting (lo-tak masking) tape, lead foil, or self-sticking aluminum foil (that the car builders use). Depends on what I'm in the mood for and what I've got at hand but, I sure like the self-sticking stuff especially if slinging the straps around a 'body' or tarpage etc.

Personally I use very thinly cut (whatever size you need) masking tape.....slice to fit and paint...the texture of the masking tape I find makes a realistic texture you would find on a real sling for a weapon.

I found a small square of very soft brown leather at Michaels. It cuts easily. Very thin strips...you can also easily add PE buckles, etc, to it. Only a buck or two and it will provide me with straps for a long time. perfect color too!

I've used lead foil, chart tape, masking tape and plain bond paper -- they all have pluses and minuses.

One thing I've tried that I keep going back to is the "tear-proof" paper that FedEx and other companies use for envelopes. This stuff is really strong, but flexible. It takes paint pretty well and one envelope will last a lifetime. It cuts easily and water doesn't affect it.

I use those icecycles (sp?) that go on Christmas trees. They are the perfect width and require no cutting. A box big enough to last 20 years costs about fifty cents.

I use regular notepad paper. I have colored sheets in basically four colors using markers from the art store, green, tan, black and red brown the paper can be easily cut bernds without breaking will fit through all harnesses I've come across. I fold and tack it with kid paper glue stick then hit it with CA. its paintabe malable and cheap.

Oddly enough, when I first started doing models, I used dental floss. The unwaxed stuff. It was exactly the right thickness for 1/35 figs, it stayed in place with superglue, and it gave my figs a minty smell. I stopped using it because it didn't look right for gun straps. However, for pack straps and the like it works well and it can be easily trimmed down with an xacto blade for a seamless transition to the existing strap on the figure.

Now I mainly use the foil from yogurt lids or from wine bottles. That's how I became simultaneously lactose intolerant and inebriated. #:-)

For straps i have been using masking tape and recently turned to self adhesive aluminium tape and also lead foil from wine bottles they all work very well but the masking is cutted precisely and very easily compared to the others . But it doesnt have volume and depth as the others

Ola People

Something I have used succesfully to make riflestraps, Tie downs etc. is the Aluminum Foil used in These Aluminum Pie lids. It has the correct thicknes and cuts really easy. Easy to form and it will hold it´s shape.
I made the straps for the jerrycan holders from this foil and the shape is really nice and when painted this will be even better.

I hope this is of some help for you

my friend uses a thin transparent plastic sheet which is usually used for keeping documents in. it looks very realistic when streched a bit and than painted.

I always put straps to the guns of my figures. Usually, I make it out of lead foil. Sometimes, I use the aluminum strips cut from an aluminum baking pan.

I don't know the correct name but... The electronic enthousiasts have a balck tape that comes in all sizes (from 0.3 mm to 1 centimeter). It should be used to etch electronic circuit boards. the tape is protecting copper from being etched away.

It has proven to be very useful for me to make safety belts, gun straps, ...

I've used aluminum foil but didn't like it. I still prefer masking tapes cut to desired lenght and width.

Over the years I've used just about everything.
Bond paper, lead foil, aluminum from pie plates, brass strips from shim stock, and .005 plastic. and yes, even a photo etched set... (can't remember who made it though).
I still like the way lead foil works and holds it's shape best.

Most people aren't aware that even if your lead foil is on the thick side you can simply roll it thinner. I use a steel rod, and a thick block of aluminum I got out of the scrap bin at work, and can roll it by hand to paper thinness. You can also inpart a texture to it by gently rolling a mousetail file over it.

there is many things you can use and it also depends on the size of the figure, you could use a piec of leather, or cloth or paper who know the options are endless
