I agree with most here Saving Private Ryan for it's visaral portrayal of how brutal war can be, as is Fury.
I see a lot of guys mentioning Fury. Granted it was great to see a real Tiger in action but in my opinion, I thought the movie was as pile of dung. Especially after the scene when the tank hit a mine and was crippled laying in the path of practically a brigade of Germans of which at least a dozen were carrying Panzerfausts. Is it really going to take them that long to knock out that tank?
Hollywood trash at its finest. INMHO
And why couldn't they just go around it ?
But I did find it entertaining

All that and how closely the tanks were grouped together... bad..bad... tactics.
The worst part though was perpetuating the Sherman vs Tiger 5:1 ratio myth.

I'm very passionate and particular about war films, they are very important to me and my family. That is why efforts like Inglorious basterds and u571 offend me greatly. My prefered films take a balanced and sensitive view to greater improve out understanding, and those of generations to come. Films like:
Laurence of Arabia, Bridge over the river Kwai, Bridge too far, Saving Pte Ryan, Ice cold in Alex, Bridge at Remagen, The Cruel Sea, Dam Busters, Battle of Britain, and of course the Horrific "come and see" about the eastern front.

Dave, I recommend "Little Big Soldier". Not modern, but still excellent portrayal of what combatants go through.

Browsed thru this topic and although Band of Brother and Saving Private Ryan are incredibly realistic I have to go with The Cruel Sea.

Hacksaw Ridge was excellent. Although, I wish they had covered more of the battle. Very little was shown of what he did.
I have to add American Sniper.

Das Boot are my all time favourites.
Das Boot was awesome. Real feel of what U-boat war was.

Surprised no one has mentioned Panfilov's 28 Men.
Incredible armored attack sequences done with 1/12 scale models. And I couldn't tell until I read articles on line. You'd swear it was CGI or the real thing.

hmmm..., seems no one's mentioned LEBANON. it's about an IDF tank crew set entirely inside a Centurion. the only view to the outside world is thru the gunners sight. if I were their unit cmdr I'd COURTmartial the lot of them for insubordination and dereliction of duty. unfortunately it's subtitled

There's a lack of subtitled recent foreign films on these lists in general. The foreign films here are ones that received large distribution and are widely available dubbed.
