One of my favourite films is Dr Strangelove. I particularly enjoy the B52 bombing run, the way the crew go through the checklists seems so technically impressive. Does anyone know how authentic these scenes are?

Probably pretty close. From looking at government films of that time...it seems to fall right in line with would be fact.

Of course, instead of a cowboy hat, I believe a beret is worn when "riding the big one" down to the surface of the earth.

yes ...great movie

Remember, we cannot allow a mine shaft gap.

Couple things on one of my favorite films...

I don't know if Kubrick was spoofing or there was a major continuity hitch, but as the B-52 flies over the tundra at low level, it casts a B-17's shadow on the ground.

Kubric would later use some of the same footage fromthe scene where the B-52 was flying over the water/icebergs in 2001: A Space Odyssey as the Dave Bowman's pod is being tossed through the black hole.

Too funny Al. Never knew that. Slim Pickens putting on the hat has to be his best scene, other than the classic grunting scene from the classic flick "1941."
