The newer Tamiya compressor is quiet enough, comparable to the sound level of a modern sewing machine. Noisy, but not so noisy that your neighbor would take out his shotgun or something.

You lucky banker-programmer-bastard!!! Haha! Buying that with your lumped-salary huh! Hmph! So how goes it? May moisture trap? Flow-control? Hehe! C'mon post some sample pics!

I'm a staunch advocate of the Tamiya Spray Work System. Like Wanze said it comes in one neat package. Just find a suitable power supply and you're all set. I've been using mine for years. One of the really good aircraft modelers in IPMS uses the basic airbrush and produces astounding results. In fact, ngayon lang siya gumagamit ng Tamiya HG airbrush and we have yet to see his work with it. I still have parts left over from my old shop so just let me know if yours need "overhauling."
One downfall of the Spray Work system is it spits water after using it for a long time and in cold weather. It doesn't come with a water trap so you'll have to make one.

Because of the weather here in the Philippines, even though there is a water trap, if the AB is used for a long time it will still spit water. I'm curretly using a Badger compressor with a badger water trap (I bought it at St. Patrick's school and office supplies) but it still spits out water. Everytime I AB for a long period of time I see to it that I clean the hose by blowing and tapping it (no dirty minds).

It goes well fine. No moisture trap and flow-control. I haven't experienced the moisture thing yet though. Probably comes from the habit of turning the compressor off and therefore allowing the mechanism to cool. Moisture only happens when the compressor pump is hot, warming the air as it enters the tube, and as the air goes through the much cooler air tube, it condenses. Turn off the compressor every once in a while and you're fine. Doesn't heat up fast enough anyways. Although that may be because of our cooler nights nowadays. #:-)

Hmmm, gotta do more "test" painting

St. Patricks is the store up in cubao right? How does one get there, I've heard a lot about their AB-tools there.

If ever I do get an AB I'm primarily going to be using it for interior detailing and miniature-parts-painting(mahirap mag brush paint nang car-parts eh, doesn't have that out-of-the-casa-look) -- plus my future AFV endeavours.

JonJon is still a lucky banker boy. Hmph.

What's everyone's take on the basic Tamiya AB set?

I use a couple of Tamiya a/b's. One is the trusty old Basic Spray Gun which has never let me down. Like what El Jefe said, spare parts abound (although the casing doesn't have), it's easy to take apart and clean. It comes with a compressor though I must admit, there's no way (unless anyone can offer a solution) to silence the noise it makes. The other's a HG Super Fine a/b. It lives by its name. The finest spray is as thick as a pentel pen. I use it mainly to do precision painting and ideal for painting those intricate cammos on German and Japanese WW2 a/c.

I just bought myself the Tamiya Spray Works airbrush+compressor set. hopefully this would be the start of something beautiful #:-)

Good for you, LaTex. Don't underestimate its "Basic" tag. In the hands of a good modeler, the Tamiya can do wonders.

Glad this thread went back.

Please join me as I bury my old Crescendo. It is because of my ineptitude that it died. The body will be buried, the other parts will be salvaged. Sigh...

I'm thinking of buying the Crescendo set found at NBS. Yes, my whole savings down the drain. I'm biased because it's the only AB I've used (well, except for the temporary use of Gunze's Pro-Spray Mk1) and I want something that I'm familiar with now. Although I'm still eyeing the Gunze Procyon ABs.

Anyone has any idea how the Gunze line of DA ABs work?

BTW, I'm quite intrigued by the Tamiya HG ABs you guys have mentioned. If it's still P5K, I might just get that instead of the Crescendo.

And I agree :-D So far the Tamiya Sprayworks set has not disappointed me. My only complaint is the difficulty in fully disassembling it for thorough cleaning. I'm kinda scared of cracking the plastic or sometihng

I have a Paasche-VL I got from the US. It's not let me down yet, and it's easy to disassemble, clean and reassemble. I haven't tried spraying fine lines with it though - but it makes an excellent first airbrush! It's about US$50 or so at Dixieart.com - but I don't think they have a distributor in the Philippines...

My grandpa and I got a good compressor at Arranque - not sure of the exact stats, but it cost P3,900 and has a huge tank and auto-shut off.

From what I've heard, Tamiya, Gunze and Iwata airbrushes are made bythe same company - I would think Iwatas provide similar performance at a lower price. If you have relatives in the States, you could get the stuff shipped to them, then have them bring it back here as "pasalubong" when they visit. Badger could also be a good choice - parts are available here, and their 155 "Anthem" and 360 "Universal" are pretty good from what I've heard.

For buying online, try www.dixieart.com or www.bearair.com. Both have the most competitive prices anywhere (much lower than the prices here), but Bear-air has a much looser return policy...

Hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear 'bout your Crescendo GI. I got mine from dixieart about 4 months ago. I'm still getting used to it. I'm a bit tight on my budget for now so I'm using a Testors "mini blue ice compressor" I got from Squadron. I started on the Gunze AB set too, the one with the air can.

I haven't been using it that much but it's practical compared to using canned air. A bit noisy though. I would recommend it but if you're seriously considering buying an air compressor & I mean seriously maybe you should visit you're local hardware store. Sometimes they have large capacity A/C on sale complete with hose, fittings, gauges, & even moisture traps.

Hey Blitz, try to see if they got the "Husky" brand I think it has one model that comes with the accessories, has a max. pressure of 50 psi & cost around 100 bucks or so. Also try looking for a Campbell Hausfeld brand.
