This may seem crazy..What about modifying one of the types you get in a drink? Around here Chinese restaraunts have them.

A closed one like in the photo should not be that hard to carve out of plastic. Just get the a rough size idea and start carvinig and sanding.

Good luck, wish I could be of more help.

Aha!! Digby I presume?

Im using this kit for my RMG and the umbrella was included.

For those not that fortunate I would suggest:
Start with a metalrod of the apropiate diameter.
Sand and file one end rounded.
Cut it to length.
Next role a cone of putty like Milliput or A&B.
Insert the rod in the middle of the cone.
Now you can decide wheter you would sculpt the folds while wet or carve them out when set.
Use led foil for straps and perhaps the tip of a pin for the point of the umbrella.

IMPORTANT!!
Please note that the sources report Digby wearing the berade and not the helmet as depicted in your picture and in my kit.

Ii'd use a piece of metal wire for the core
add a milliput (or other modeling material) handle
then add fine wire to scale umbrella wire frame
maybe finish with tissue and glue/water mixture (you know the trick ?)

feel free to PM me on that.

Gee, I think I'll try my hand at making an umbrellla right away !

Although I don't have a picture of it as of yet, I just completed an umbrella for the good Major today. The Dio is a depiction of Digby-Warter and Father Egan. The Major is openning the umbrella so unlike yours, which is closed, mine if partially opened. I used brass wire for the shaft and created the internal frame with 32 gauge stainless steel wire. The fabric needed folds and this was created with 2 inch masking tape. The pattern on the tape was very fine and after a coat of black primer it is appears rather convincing. The handle was made from stryene rod heated in boiling water to create the proper curve.

DOH ! Of course ! Why make life hard on yourself if you can use lead foil around a stretched sprue core ???

Another option is to :
1. take a metal rod of correct diameter, bent at one end to simulate the curved handle.
2. cut a facial tissue to the right size, wet it with a mixture of glue and water.
3. turn the pole upright and drape the tissue over the pole at the center. Then twist the tissue around the pole to simulate the cloth of the umbrella.
4. Before it dries, twist a length of wire around the tissue to create the depression created by the strap.and allow to dry.
5. now use lead foil to create the strap and glue into place. Use lead foil to create the metal tip of the umbrella.
6. now paint the bloody thing!

Hey ambrose82,

I really like your idea for making an umbrella. So simple yet so ingenious. :-)
