Yeah, well, I'm watching Roger Daltrey describing life aboard the US brig Niagara during the Battle of Lake Erie, 1813.

blissfully this disgrace aired last night. Not to trash her, but what on earth did she actually do to get all this attention and make millions of dollars "writing" a book? I sure hope we can store her away until the next edition of trivial pursuit comes out in 10 years

I am hoping that her book can be found in the FICTION section. She is not a hero, she did not fight bravely, but instead took the glory from other soldier swho were all that.

Hi. I would imagine, truth be told, that this women actually has hardly anything to do with all the hype that has been told and written about her of late. Most all of it comes from the news media and propaganda ministery over in Washington City, in their 'sell of vast loads of prime, grade A, Bull S---', on our latest war to 'free' the poor depressed peoples of the world, esp. those who just happen to have some vital natural resource that we what to have our hands on, physically speaking.

And, what was it the Fuhrer said? Tell the people something long enough and sooner or later they will believe it to be the truth. And the bigger the lie, the more easier it will go down. Just as long and the money keeps flowing in to the war manufactuers, and that is basically what wars are all about, once you remove all the patriotic sentiments from it, anyway.

Sorry, but my Native American feeling are a tad bit stirred. Old Simon does tend to come to the forefront every now and then.

Take care, sgirty

She's cute, blonde, and came out of combat injured but alive. The honchos in spin control grabbed this and sold it to the media at a time they needed to put a face on this adventure.

Reports have been circulating for several months that the operation to save her was a major league photo op and the rangers busted caps to amke things long hore hairy than they really were and there was no oppositoin to their rescue mission.

I skipped the TV movie and I'll likely skip the book, but I will check out the interview with her on ABC tonight.

I think a lot of flack is being misdirected at this girl. Some people act like she somehow concocted all the hype that surrounds her. The truth is, she's a great news story. When the 507th was ambushed, it was pretty horrifying -- a big mistake made, rear echelon soldiers killed and captured, one of them happens to be a pretty blonde from the hills of West Virginia.

Initial reports said a blond soldier had fought heroically until shot and stabbed into submission. The press and the military immediately assumed it had to be Lynch, but as it turns out, the blond fighter was probably SGT Donald Walters, who was KIA at the ambush. Another hero was PFC Patrick Miller, who killed at least seven Iraqi soldiers and took out a mortar pit. The other surviving soldiers all stated they thought Lynch was dead in the wrecked Humvee.

Iraqi television released the video of the battered and obviously frightened POWs, as well as the appalling shots of the dead U.S. soldiers. We also came to know that Lynch was captured -- not dead.

Lynch's family -- honest, rural, Christian people -- didn't hunker down in their house and shun the media as some of the other POWs' families did. In typical small-town fashion, family, friends and neighbors rallied around the Lynch family, and they were too kind not to come out and talk to the media. You couldn't help but empathize with these folks. Lynch was the girl next door, the little sister, the daughter who joined the Army so she could eventually go to college. It was extremely disturbing to imagine what might be happening to this girl in the hands of the Iraqis -- some of us remember what happened to Rhonda Cornum, the sole female POW of the first gulf war ... BTW, COL Cornum now commands the military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany.

A book deal was in the works before she was even rescued. The Lynch family is hardly wealthly, and probably would have sold Jessica's story even if she had not survived. Lynch would have been foolish to turn down the money publishers were throwing at her. For crying out loud, she'll probably never recover from her injuries.

I'm sure the other former POWs will also somehow profit from their experience. Maybe they won't make as much as Lynch's deal, but they'll do something with their noteriety -- whether it's selling books or movie rights, or giving motivational/inspirational talks at churches and schools.

Did the military put spin on the Lynch story? Probably, but the media was already in a frenzy over Lynch and the other POWs -- it didn't take much to keep this story spinning. And the military didn't make the TV movie or publish the book.

I do have a couple lingering questions: Why hasn't Miller been promoted to specialist? Is he just a Gomer who got lucky in combat?

Also, why won't the powers-that-be upgrade SGT Walters' Bronze Star Medal to a Silver Star? Or even more? Miller got the Silver Star -- all the rest got the BSM. Evidence suggests that the actions of Miller and Walters saved the lives of all the others. IMHO, this is what people ought to be squaking about -- not whether or not Jessica Lynch deserves a book deal.

Lynch has stated that she is not a hero -- she's simply a survivor.

Sorry for the rant; I'll put away my soapbox now ...

Okay, I'll admit it...
I did watch the movie, its was okay. The part with the actual ambush was filmed in the "Saving Private Ryan" Handi-Cam way, lots of moving around, camera angles, etc. I did notice that for the 1st half of the movie, the main USMC Colonel (played by Micheal Rooker "Rowdy Burns" from Days of Thunder) had his collar brass eagles upside-down, I guess somebody finally noticed it and they corrected it for the 2nd half.

An interesting new development is that; Hustler's Larry Flynt says he bought nude photos of Pfc. Jessica Lynch to publish in Hustler magazine, but changed his mind because she is a “good kid” who became “a pawn for the government.”

Strange days indeed,
-Chris

Jessica Lynch is a survivor of an ambush of the 507th. A hero? Not really. We live in such an instant gratification world that the story spun way out of control. Jessica is young, pretty and captured by those mean awful Iraqis. What a story - even if most of it wasn't true.

What upsets me is that the Seals/Delta Force who stormed the hospital and rescured her are heros. They did not know the strength of the potential enemy they would face and yet for a fellow soldier they would risk their lives. Yet, these brave soldiers were diminished and their action lessened by the same media who built Jessica up.

Strange world we live in.
