what causes a cookie to go bad?

i couldnt log in for a while.I kept getting a message that said"bad cookie".So I emptied all the cookies out of the cookie jar,and now it works fine

Mold! Leave'em out on the counter and they go bad - Oreo's are notorious for this!

I second the motion that cookies dont go bad if eaten after creation/purchase.
Microsoft's party line on cookies is at this URL:

A reason they could go bad is spyware trying to read your cookie cache and determine your surfing habits, a rival site poorly engineers thier cookie program and tries to write to someone else's cookie on your system, and breaks it. Browser/system crash while at a site that is cookie enabled, etc.
THe link above tells you how to get jiggy with them so have at it.
