Hi everybody. What to say about myself? Well off the top of my head and in no particular order.
I've been modeling figures for about a year now. Mostly Verlinden kits. I use acrylics. Up until recently I've done Napoleonics, the Verlinden kit "Old Guard's Last Stand" was awesome. I have my eyes on an Andrea kit of an Imperial Guardsmen, the stance reminds me of the painting of the Guardsmen at attention with a forest background and a tent; but I can't think of the painter off the top of my head.
I've also done some medieval and ancient painting. The ancients were great practice for flesh tones since the figures were both shirtless.
I got into this hobby because I love history and I love bringing it alive. I really enjoy researching the time periods for my models and trying to capture something of that time. I studied European history in college, with a sub-specialty in classical history. I am going to law school next year, so this is an outlet for all my repressed historical longings.
Interstests in terms of periods range from the ancient to the present day. I am a particular fan of the Patrick O'Brian novels.
My current project is to start some stratch building. Right now I am just mastering the basics of forming human figure and not really working on uniforms or equipment. It's challenging but fun. My first project will probably be a Royal Navy Captain along the lines of Jack Aubrey. It's a fairly simple uniform so I can develop some skills there. I am also thinking of doing a figure based on the poem "Hengist Wants Men" by Jorge Borges, about the Dark Ages and the Britons. Any references on scratch building and especially on how to do chain mail and other fine-work would be a huge help.
Anyway, that's me. This looks like a great site.

Making chain
This is extremely difficult and time consuming, but this is how it can be done.
- First roll a strip of putty and press it onto the figure

- Press it in with a knife to create a shape like this.

- Push a needle tip into each wide section

- Stick a tiny ball of putty onto each narrow section and then drag the ends into the holes created in the previous step.

I hope this might help but I cant find the article so fast sorry
