Several months ago, someone emailed me a picture of a diorama of several marines crossing a bridge. The unusual thing was that while it "appeared" to be a black and white photo, the actual diorama was PAINTED in black and white... including shading, shadows, etc. It was just an unbelievealbe paint job...
Does anyone else recall seeing this, or perhaps have a link to that photo?

I believe that's the one he's looking for TOKE. It's the first and only one I've ever seen. I think it first appeared at last year's AMPS show (2002).
Not only is the idea an extremely unique one, but it is superbly executed. My only wish would be to see it in the flesh. The guy must have studied old B&W films to get the shading right......very cool.

A turly new and unique idea.

That dio is incredible. I can't even imagine getting the shading right to pull that off. If you couldn't see the wood base you'd swear it was a black and white photo. I had thought that maybe you could take black and white photos of a dio and compare them to b&w period photos to see if you've got the colors and shading right. I would NEVER have thought of doing this. That guy is GOOD.

Amazing work !!! Be curious to know if he blended the shades himself
or used specific pre mixed shades. Any info on basic principles to paint in
this style? Start with white and paint darker, or vice versa?... maybe it varies
with the object painted..

That ranks right up there with the 1/16th LAV-25 as one of the finest pieces of work I have ever seen.

Truly Awesome. I'm sitting here wondering how anyone could conceivably paint in black and white...Incredible, just gives me a migraine thinking about it.....Jim (++)

I remember reading about this dio from the guy who did it, and he said he did study some B+W fotos but alot of his help came from taking pictures of prepainted models and painting certain colours, taking pictures of them and seeing what the colour looked like in black and white after playing with a photo editor. He did a lot of experimenting to get it right!
I agree ........ really brilliant and original idea. The dio itself would be stunner, painted ordinarily, but like this....... outstanding!

Fantastic!! An object lesson in analysing tones... :-)
One of those models that stops you in your tracks...
Did he have the Monkees "Only Shades of Grey" playing as a soundtrack?
When I was a kid I remember a "spoof" silent comedy - shot in colour with black and whire make-up...
Who's up for a "Sepia" campaign?... :-)
All the best

When I was in art school (a loooong time ago), one of the assignments was to paint a picture using only one color and black ( the paper was the white). It really forces your eye to see shadows and their relationship to each other and the whole. I had never thought that it could be used so well in 3D. It certainly causes one to think about all of those pictures that would be good dio's if only one could get the color right. It is a brillant piece.
