Use Johnssons Klear floor polish straight from the bottle. It will level itself out and doesnt usually show any brush marks. Most top modellers actually brush on the johnssons in the particluar areas they need it for decals etc. so it must work OK. For flat base I use model master dullcote but I airbrush it on so have no experience with brushes here.
Another option if you have no airbrush is to buy an aerosol tin of both gloss and flat clear varnish. I think citadel/games work shop have these!

I also agree. Klear has diferent names, it could be also Future and Glo Coat, the important thing is that it has to be acrylic shine for floors.
For mate coat I use Model Master Mate Laquer, if you prefer an acrylic mate coat you can try with Vallejo Mate Varnish.

Hi Hip: I totally agree, I have hand brushed future on both aircraft and armor models in preparation for decals and washes. It usually takes a few coats and you have to watch out for bubbles and froth if you are aggressive with your brushing. Check out Holdfasts recent article on using Future/Kleer.

Hi Phantom :-)
Johnson seem to be determined to confuse us...
As far as I can tell, the identical product is sold as:
Future - in Amerrica... and
Klear - in the UK...
Some recent posts suggest there maybe yet another name in mainland Europe...

Cheers all, top answers as usual.
I'll try the Johnsons for now and try and locate one of the matt sprays soon.
Ta again

I don't even possess an airbrush so everything is brush painted. For both gloss and matt coats I use Windsor & Newton artists acrylic varnishes, they're fast drying, hard wearing and a bottle at £4.25 lasts me about 6 months.

Hi just my 2 cents worth... brushing does a great job and I have had no problems brushing clear and dull coats in the past, but once you use an airbrush for most there is no turning back. I started with the cheap Testors military airbrush set from Walmart its an all plastic setup with your air being supply from a can. I now have graduated to a Badger 150, but I still use my $24.99 airbrush to apply all my clears (including: johnsons). I also experiment spraying different materials first before I risk my Badger. Either way you go as along as you take your time and not rush (hardest thing to learn) your project you will be fine :-)
