.... that you forgot you already have ?

I just received a parcel that included two dozen sets of PE and several sets of resin wheels and whilst putting each set into it's respective kit box discovered that I already had two of the PE sets and one of the wheel sets.

And I'm not old enough to be going senile yet.

The saddest part is that now that I have two sets of PE for a Churchill I'm seriously considering buying a second Churchill kit to go with it.

It's normally paint for me, and normally black and white for some reason - and strangely enough I don't use all that much of these colours when painting

The first sign of ageing is memory loss. Also, the first sign of ageing is memory loss.

This is why I keep records. I may be anally retentive and obsessive and I don't know what else ending in -ive, but it saves me from myself. Mind you, even I don't list the paints I've got ...

Oddly paint is the one thing I never have enough of. To get to the paints means walking past the kits so entails a quick "let's see what's new or on sale" and usually results in half an hour later having picked out three or four kits to buy and forgetting all about the paint I went there for in the first place.

Was at the Scottish Nationals this year and saw 3 boxes of figures and decided to buy them.
When I got home and took them out of the bag something started to bug me as to why they looked so familiar.
Checked my eBay and found I had been bidding on the same sets.
Actually won them and cost me less than what I'd payed at the show

All too often until I started an inventory list using an Excel spreadsheet. I include a section of what I am currently looking for and what would be nice if it came along at the right price. I keep it updated and print out a copy especially just before attending the next model show. It has saved me from some duplication.

I have an Excel inventory sheet for this same reason, but I noticed a few months ago, I managed to buy two Kubelwagens. I had forgotten to fill in the first one.

I can't remember everything I have and used to come home from shows with duplicates. I've been told I have OCD, but I came up with a tracking system. I bought a pocket notebook with 5 sections - kit, track, barrel, PE, and resin. Whenever I see something new that I want I write it down in my notebook and cross it off when I buy it.
At home, I bought a package of 4 colored 1 inch dots - yellow, red, blue, and green. When I put an aftermarket item in the kit box, I put a dot on the box end. Yellow for PE, red for barrel, blue for tracks, and green for resin. A glance at my shelves tells me what is in each box, what I have, what I need, and what kits are ready to be built.
I have Excel but this way seems easier.

Nice little system there Matt . Simple , fast and easy .

Can't say that I have come home with duplicates of any thing . I know what I have in the stash and the work bench at all times . Since being a WW1 modeller there really isn't many options of accessories . Going to the supermarket is another story all together though

I have far too many kits to try and keep tabs on what I have for all of them, so I come home with duplicates on occassion, but it isn't a problem. For instance, I have an even 20 P-51's on the shelves. Most have resin, decals and PE for them. Others don't. If I see resin and/or PE for a P51 at a good price, chances are its coming home with me. If by chance I do find I have more than one particular item for a single kit I have, there is always the sale forums or my model club buddies who I can sell stuff to. I tried to use a spread sheet one time and it was more work than I cared to put into it. Figured I could take it with me to shows to keep track of items etc. It was a huge binder as I had and still have a huge amount of models to keep track of so it became a real pain to haul this thing around. It went the way of the dodo bird shortly thereafter. My model shelves are an ecosystem of their own. Always evolving, changing, morphing from one area to the next. I just let nature run her course and adjust as needed. "Q"

Books.

And bloody magazines, too, but mostly books.

I will come back from a show and put away a book to find it's twin sitting there already.

Baaagh!

Oh, well, another for the sell-off box. Bugger.

Yes, it's happened to me too. A while back I bought a PE set for the AS-90, only to discovered I had already bought it a year earlier, for less money! I cobbled together a basic Open Office database that allows me to track kits and link AM sets to them easily. It's come on handy now that I have a large stash, and has saved me multiple times from buying duplicates.

I'm incredibly anal when it comes to being organised but I'm way too much of a technophobe to get into doing a spreadsheet, I married someone 11 years younger with a computing degree so I didn't have to learn how to do any of that stuff.

Not to mention how do you hold it and carry all the bits you bought ?

I just discovered the downside to this affliction

I just sat down to start my Italeri Opel conversion and whilst I discovered I had three different sets of resin wheels, markings, and everything else I need I just discovered that I have managed to aquire three sets of PE for the Tamiya Opel and none for the Italeri despite looking at it several times on buying sprees and thinking "no I don't need that, I already have it".
