Dear fellow modellers I am asking the following question purely out of interest. I have been modelling since the mid 1960's and I always start and finish one model at a time. I hate to leave a model half constructed or half painted in its box and move on to another model as my interest in it is gripped or wains.

So my fellow modellers the question is :- A model at a time or several models on the go?

regards

Six going right now, all at various stages. Only three kits completed since I jumped back in the game. Combination of learning curve and available time. As my techniques get better I will (hopefully) finish more of what I start.

Dear Russ
Not the greatest of conversion rates. But hey time is the factor here. we all have families and limited time. If I ever get to the States and get pulled over in Utah I hope its you and at least we can have a decent chat on modelling.

Dear Pat,
From the first two replies I am obviously in the minority so far. Looking forward to Ireland winning the six nations this season.

Best wishes

One at a time.

I hate a cluttered work bench.

Right now I'm looking at four AFV's and two 1/16 figures in progress on my desk. I also have another three AFV's that are ready for paint, sitting in a glassed in bookcase to keep the dust off.

Dear Darren,
Does this mean that we start a model in a surge of enthusiasm and loose interest or are we compelled to spread our talents over several projects 'as the paint dries'

In my case its a bit of both lol. There is only so much time, but lots of desire to build kits

I usually have two going at a time. When one reaches the decal stage I start the next one. If it is a complicated build, I might only have one going.

I have one build that stalled out about two years ago and is neatly packed up in a box. I fully plan on getting around to finishing it, one of these days.

A few at a time and actually complete about 90%.
I haven't touched my current project in about a week due to catching the bug. Sanding putty and the dust will not feel good. I do, however sit down in front of it everyday and stare at it.

I try to have many models going if they are all supposed to be the same color. This way, I can paint them all at one time. However, after the painting phase, I will finish each one individually before working on another.

Define "on the go"

I have several in various stages of incompletion, but only one active build - the M8 HMC which is currently being blogged here on Armorama and a few other sites.

Last year I started using what I called "the tin method". I have a metal box/tin which is about 15cm square and about 10cm tall. Basically my "rule" was I could only undertake new figure projects if the figure (including base) could fit in the tin. If there was space, I would only undertake a project which could fit in, else no deal. Normally I found I could fit a 54mm figure and base, plus a handful of Warhammer & 40K figures in the tin. It worked well for me

Im a one at a time type of guy until...........the M1A1 stowage stumped me (I cant seem to convince myself what type of clutter I want); the A-10 needed sanding (my newborn demanded my full attention and i didnt want any dust flying around); and finally, my V-22 has been a labor of love, but i had to take a break from all the scratchbuilding.....

So i have 4, not to mention an Academy Blackhawk that broke some of the main rotor during scratchwork.

But trust me, I am a 1 model type of guy....Ive been trying desperately to finally get that Abrams finished.

Cheers,
Mike

Too many unbuilts,
a large number of started (unfinished) and about
200 finished ones.
Sometimes I built most of a kit simply to be able
to shrink the box a bit. Assemble the big parts up to
where I must start painting (spray booth not set up yet)
and/or where I have to add fragile parts ;-)

According to my spreadsheet I currently have 41 open projects. About half are figures and figure sculpts. Of the models, 6 are completely built and in some stage of painting or weathering (my weakest skills). I also tend to go back and "upgrade" stuff when I learn something new, so arguably nothing is "done" until I give it away.

One at a time for me. And it gets worse: usually the "stash" is only one but currently standing at 3!

I build one at a time usually. Sometimes I will havetwo going at once, or a vehicle and a figure set, but that is it.

Right now 3 AFVs are in progress, about 7 figures, and one plane. I have one simpler project (Tamiya Universal carrier) to work on when I am sick of the more complex DML Marder IIIM (call that a "Smart Kit" ) and the somewhat simpler DML Tiger I late w/zimmerit. What a great kit.

I always work on one model at a time. If I work on more than one, I've found that I lose focus, and wind up taking too long to complete either of them. I got back into models back in Spring 2005, so since then I've completed 7 models. I guess that's about six months per model, roughly. Currently I'm building the AMT Enterprise D, and I'm almost finished, and I started that back in May, so that's still within my average. I have about ten kits in my to-do closet, so I should be good for another 5 years!

For me: multiple projects running concurrently.
