Does anybody know where I might be able to get realistic tow chains. The plastic ones in the Tamiya kit broke and I would like to replace it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

most people use the wire picture frame wire as replacements and superglue the tow hooks on to the ends. :-)

I use the "brickie" thread, the one to which they attach the lead to see if the walls are straight. It's inexpensive, just soak it in water and white glue. Let it dry and it takes very well shape and paint...
Other options can be:
- to twist thin lead wire (the one used to weight the flies for fly fishing)
- use (depending on the size) the iron chords for bycicle brakes or the one from the accellerator on motorbikes. If you "cook" it on a candle is easier to bend but i use it only when the tow cable is quite straight

Shawn:

You've received a couple good ideas for cables, but are asking about chain.

Railroad model shops often carry chain that is small enough for what you want. The Walthers catalog sells several sizes and the RR shop might order some for you if you ask. I needed about 5 feet of fine chain when I scratchbuilt a Sherman Crab mine flail a few years ago and that's how I got it.

You also might want to try to find some cheap jewelry chain. Check the make-your-own jewelry sections of craft shops for chain, as well as nice wire for models. Jewelry kiosks in malls will sometimes sell relatively inexpensive 14K plated chain by the inch.

You can twist them from a number of items as scoccia mentioned

Speaker wire (stipped)
Old Mouse wire
Old CAT5 network wire.
Old wiring from any small appliance.

Take a bit of foil and fashion and end strap and take a larger piece of wire (hobby style) and fashion a tow loop. Sit the loop and cable together and wrap them with the strap.

The company Karaya makes excellent tow cables. They are available from www.airconnection.on.ca

check out the shipbuilding area of your local hobby shop. My Local HobbyTown USA's carry brass chain in 1, 1.5 and I think 2 mm sizes that can be painted and looks ok on 1/35 scale armor. I think I paid around $3.00 for like 48 " of this type of chain.

here is a link to a picture of this of chain I used on a model.
