Grumps, what
have you gotten yourself into?

I've yet to run across the wonderful product in any of my local food shops, even those with the two aisles of "International Foods".
Unless there is an aisle labelled "Internaldamnation Foods" you are unlikely to find Marmite at least...

Vegemite - is that like Marmite for kids?
Saw Vegemite in Sainbury's while I was shopping today, maybe I ought to try some. Some day

So there I was, going up and down the 2 aisle international section in the supermarket this morning on the way home. And still no Marmite or vegmite, but I did spy some of my favorite Polish cookies, and naturally had to pick them up. (I lived in a mostly Polish town for 15 years, so know what these taste like!)

Strangely, they had no real imported English tea, I figure I'd do this taste test with a cup of real English tea! Then I saw the other product--- not wishing to break the saftey seal, I bought a jar of it, the instructions say to simply add hot water to one good teaspoon of this stuff. Well, when I got it home, I opened it, and for a second though I bought 125g of old motor oil sludge. It's called BOVRIL.
Did I make a mistake? Do people really drink this? Will I need the barf bucket next to me?

Bovril?? Lovely stuff... Sort of concentrated soup stock for drinking. It was even issued as part of the Brit ration packs. Drink it or use it as flavouring...

Thank you, now that I have a better idea of what it is, I'll give it a shot.

Bovril, now there is something that you could use for weathering, oiling your bike etc etc. IMHO they should have banned it under the Geneva Conventions.
I'd prefer to eat Vegemite.
If you want a good meaty drink try crumbling an Oxo cude into a mug, and top up with hot water. Chicken Oxo works well also. If this is unavailable in your local international food shop, let me know and i'll send some.

There was a thread somewhere about using Marmite for weathering (variation on the salt technique), I'd be worried about Bovril eating the plastic

Who would have thought that a jar of black sludge could generate such a discussion.
Poor customs, all this grot flying airmail between countries.
Let me know when the VEGEMITE arrives Dave.

Tony you´re joking ,..right??? Oxo is great stuff but IMO Bovril is the best!! for seasoning gravy, sauces & I even use it with my own burger mixes. For practical reasons the Oxo cubes are the best option for a hot drink outdoors but I think Bovril did cubes at some point, don´t know if they still do though. P.S do they still do "twiglets" that have a Marmite taste to them??

Well, as I sit here reading this thread, I'm happy to report that I'm rather enjoying my first cup of Borvil. Reminds me of the beef broth my mother use to give me as a child when I was sick. (although it's little too salty for my diet!)

So on a scale from 1 to 10, I give it a hearty 9 for flavor, and a 5 for too much salt, and because of the high salt content, will have to certainly limit my intake of it.

I suppose that it is genuine science at that - if you repeat the experiment under the same conditions you will get the same result

Drader I hit the link you posted on the previous page & found this: " In some neighborhoods it is (apparently!) common for nursing mothers to dab a little on their nipples before feeding their infants."
"There are reports that some balding men have tried smearing Marmite on their heads to promote hair growth. No assessment of whether it works, however."
I´ll see if I can convince the wife into partaking an old British custom then.
