As a medic with the 101st Airborne, he participated in Operation Market Garden, made famous in the film "A Bridge Too Far." During the Battle of the Bulge, in which Cave was wounded, his unit was captured and he was held in a German POW camp. TV PG

Between October 1944 and August '45, General Douglas MacArthur and his men recaptured the Philippines from the Japanese, led by General Tomoyuki Yamashita, in the largest single U.S. campaign in the Pacific War. As the Americans pushed forward, Yamashita had one weapon the U.S. did not--kamikaze pilots, who sacrificed their lives for maximum destruction of the enemy. The fighting continued until the Japanese sued for peace--MacArthur lost 8,000 men, but Yamashita lost a staggering 192,000! TV G
