I like to approach scratch building like doodling. With a general idea in mind, I'll just start kitmashing parts then scratch together from materials that I have around for details and shapes. I currently working on a project in the ACUTR build and this the first model of a real life subject I've try.

If you want to build real life then gather images and drawings, if available, then identify friendly building materials.

inspirated to do a hardwork consumes a lot of time

you must be shure what you want to do and expect a potential depression if before you finish the model... appears the same in plastic...

plans of good quality ( in my case german railguns i have copies of plans from the manufacturer of the original wwii railguns called Krupp

pics pics and more pics sometimes a detail is better showed by a pic than the linedrawings

patience a lot.... oriental patience...

dont know more but somebody more can addd more requirements to the list?...

Hi Matt,
I agree with both KoSprue and Panzer in general but would like to enter another parameter: are you a purist and wish to make an "exact" scaled down model or do you have a more particular idea about what the end result would be. To be more specific, I am crazy with miniature firearms, however, my priority is not the exact scale but the ability to fire my cartridges. I even go that far as not to finish a model as soon as it works properly, leaving it with an operational yet unfinished trigger for instance. So, set your goal and go on.

Where do you find good drawings, particularly of old equipment?

Hi David (and Co),

I am studying a metal scratch built 1/10 FlaK 88 37 and had problems with at least some drawings and of course any pictures I could find. One source that helped me was the eMule, where one can find a lot of things besides music.
I was lucky and did find something of use, maybe you will be too...

very good question. The project that I am working on now fits into the old equipment catagory. I had to take elevation pictures of each side and the rear, I could not get a front shot because there was another vehicle in the way, then in photo shop I made drawings directly off of the monitor screen, I don't have a printer yet. I ran them through photo shop so I can scale size the images there.

If you find a good source of vehicle drawings, please post information.

Matt,
For me it is simply the task of finding a picture or a scenario that intrigues me. I get a lot of good ideas from places like

Corbis
They have a great deal of pictures you can use, but you have to do a search to find them Well qworth the time though.

Just go back and pick a moment inn history that catches your attention, and roll with it!!!
