Review

New in 2018 from Meng/DSPIAE is a hobby cutting mat that is 17.75 inches wide x 11.75 inches tall (450mm x 300mm). The mat has a white ABS core with a pvc type surface on both sides. The cutting surface is properly hardened to facilitate cutting and longer blade life. Both sides are ‘self-healing’.

This isn’t your ordinary cutting mat however. This mat is customized for the model hobby enthusiast with several features. The ‘black side’ of the mat is measured in millimeters. There are measurements that reflect common sheet sizes such as ‘post card, B5, and A4. The ‘grey side’ has perimeter measurements in centimeters. The mat surface is divided into four sections. The top left section contains three measurements scales. The scales are 1/72, 1/48 and 1/32. The top right section contains three additional measurement scales. The scales are 1/35, 1/24 and 1/12. The bottom left section of the at contains a half-circle marked in degrees from 0 degrees to 180 degrees. This section is great for quick angle references when scratch building. The bottom right section is marked off in grid surface. Each grid box measures 5 cm x 5 cm.

Conclusion

Overall this mat is very high quality with many useful features. The MSRP is $11.00 (US) but I purchased this for $8.99 at Sprue Brothers. This is a very good price for a mat with these features focused on the model building hobby.

I began modelling around the age of 10. My first model kit was the U.S.S. Titanic. As I developed an interest in the military, I started building 1/72nd and 1/48th scale military aircraft. My interest then evolved into some 1/72nd scale armor. The first armor kits I built were 1/72nd scale Hasegawa ...

Sounds like a real cool cutting mat, especially with the scales that are printed on the backside.
