Hi Folks, I'm an ex soldier from in the British Army. I served for 15 years in the Cheshire Regiment, and I was the only Jock in the Battalion for which I'm quite proud of. All my mates in the Regiment called me Jock even the CO, I think that my accent was a dead give away . I served in Northern Ireland, Germany, Bosnia and Gulf War 1. I was attatched to the Staffordshire Regiment at that time, so I'm an honourable Desert Rat, and proud of it.
The regiments home base was Fallingbostel in Germany, and during summer leaves I'd get on my motor bike with the kilt on and ride down to Wiesbaden to go fishing. I used to get quite a lot of toots on the horns from the German girls, and I was stopped a few times by the police. One time this policewoman slipped me her phone number, so I had a date that night .
I'm now settled down with a wife and 2 kids, 2 boys, Callum 11 and Cameron 9.
If there's any other ex servicemen out there and would like to chat, I'd be delighted to here from you.
Cheers
Scott

Welcome aboard Scott. You might also look for the forum Soldiers Stories and post on there. Excuse my Yank ignorance but Jock to us Yanks means some guy who is big in sports. It means you're a Scot, right?

Hi Murdo, were you RHF by any chance. Why, because we in the Cheshires always replaced you guys at Fallingbostel and the place was usually a mess, lol.

1) Jocks don't speak the Queen's English... Don't think anybody does apart from Her Maj.

Glossary:

RHF - Royal Highland Fusileers - confused Lowland Regiment. (And as said, very messy)

REME - Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers - spanner w@nkers

RHKP - Royal Hong Kong Police. Cops (civilian "Monkeys") - say's it all really.

(Gets tin lid on and ducks below parapet sniggering)

STAND TO!!!!

Hi Craig, Unfortunately I missed Hong Kong as I was up at Catterick upping my training to infantry. Let me explain.
I joined up at 16 and went in as a junior to the Army Catering Corp in Aldershot where I remained for 2 years training to be a chef. I was posted to the Cheshire Regiment in Ballykelly, Northern Ireland in 1982. After a few weeks there I was so pissed off at being in the cookhouse all the time that I volunteered to do street patrols and I enjoyed that. So the CO asked me to up my training and rejoin the battalion after 8 weeks up at Catterick. When I came back to the Regiment they had shipped out to Hong Kong and the buggers wouldn't give me a plane ticket, so I stayed at the Depot for the time being doing courses and helping the "Grunts" through their basic training. I went on an Arctic Warfare course up to Bergen and froze my butt off. i rejoined the battalion at Falli and got on with my job. When I was 25 I was promoted to Sergeant and the Staffordshires wanted my services for a while as they had this "Problem Platoon", plus i needed the experience as well. Soon after that Iraq invaded Kuwait and we were shipped out with 7th Armoured. During the advance into Kuwait we were attacked by an A10 Warthog and lost 2 Warriors and 10 of my men, the only guys that we lost.
After the Gulf War I was back with the Cheshires and went off to Bosnia for a 6 month tour with the UN. I saw horrors there that I thought I would never see in my life.
So thats my story.

D@mn! Sorry to hear that Scott. You will have no difficulty recognising the cap badge above then.

Good to see some ex-servicemen among our ranks.
How was life in service? I'm soon to join up (fingers crossed).

Pub, pint, bitter, taxi, tube, what else do you need to know?

The one time I visited the UK, back in 76, I was in a bed and breakfast in Glasgow. I managed to totally mangle the pronunciation of Inverness. The owner gave me a hard time about it. I said that there were a lot more of us Yanks speaking English then there was English or Scots. He said, "typical Yank, confusing quality with quantity."

Hi there, enjoy it, what is your unit or regiment, and you'll find that you will be pampered a bit, with Duvets on your beds (HUH! Luxury). Your first 8 weeks are the worst once you get passed that its ok. So good luck.

Hey Scott.

I was given the choice of three reigments i'd prefer to join when applying, So i decided to choose the following three.
The Royal Scots Borderers, (I had an uncle serving in them for many years, one of the main reasons i wanted to join up) The Black Watch, (obviously everyone wants to join 'em) And the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
Yet to hear back, but we'll see how things go.

You mean the King's Own Scottish Borderers, be careful to avoid the RHF as they have got a lot of very bad press at the moment, through drug taking and dealing in drugs, so stay away from them. Black Watch is a good bet, also the Scots Guards, or the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
Good luck

Yeah, the Scots Guards seem the most appealing at the moment.
I'm hoping to maybe become a marksman, as that role has always appealed to me.
We'll see what the future has to hold for me.

"Marksman"? Are you currently ACF?
