Hi all
Just completed my first ship "Admiral Graf Spee" on a wee diorama.
This is the Matchbox 1/700th scale waterline kit.

The base is a block of polystyrenecut in half to give it a slight uneven effect.
I marked the base of the ship and used a liquid glue to melt the polystyrene and slotted the ship in place , and filled around the sides with PVA glue. The glue was also spread over the base and when dry painted .
another line of glue was run down either side to give a wave effect (my first attempt at a water effect).
Finally the sides of the base were painted black an the whole base given a clear layer to give it a shine.
The wires on the masts are hair from my daughter (she gave them to me off her hairbrush honest )

Hope you like it

For your 1st attempt at water it came out well. On your next one, extend the wake wider at the stern. The widest part of the ship will cause the wake to widen out behind it.
