What individual exerted the most influence on you from an historic perspective? Let us know the historical time period (WWI, Korea, etc) and any book written by or about the person.
thanks

WWII era.

My vote goes for Winston Churchill.

He was the right man in the right place at the right time.

I am currently reading his book "The Second World War" (abridged edition) and it gives you a perspective you prob wouldn't hear anywhere else.

Good choice. Did you read any of Manchester's books on him?

How about Abraham Lincoln,If he didn't have the will to hold the Union together. We would have had no 20th century super power USA to battle Nazi Germany or to hold back Soviet Russia, the world might be a completely diffrent place then what we know.

Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years & the War Years by Carl Sandburg. Is said to be THE best book about Lincoln.....700+ pages though.

"There is no new thing to be said about Lincoln. Thee is no new thing to be said of the moutains, or of the sea, or of the stars. The years go their way, but the same old mountains lift their granite shoulders above the drifting clouds; the same mysterious sea beats upon the shore; the same silent stars keep holy vigil above a tired world. But to the mountains and sea and stars men turn forever in unwearied homage. And thus with Lincoln. For he was a mountain in grandeur of soul. He was a sea in deep undervoice of mystic loneliness. He was a star in steadfast purity of purpose and service. And he abides."

I have used Matthew B. Rigway as a professional role model. He certainly was a dedicated professional Soldier and Officer. There are two books he wrote (The Korean War and Soldier) which I have always found to be inspirational. I am of the opinion that his personal courage, professional attributes and intestinal fortitude saved the US Army from defeat during the Korean War. Remarkable fellow.

My dad had a cousin that was in the USN during the Korean War. Which book or books covering that war are a must have in library...?

Jan-- Wow, is that a tough question to answer? I have Applebaum's series on the Korean War, Clay Blair's The Forgotten War and SLA Marshall's The River and the Gauntlet on my shelf along with the official histories. Now, my all time favorite and without a doubt highly recommended book on Korea is "This Kind Of War" by TR Fehrenbach. If you have never read it, I would urge you to do so. I have read it ten times and find something new each time. Marvelous book.

In regard to Washington... 1776 by David McCullough is one of the best.

Good call. There is another "His Excellency, George Washington" which I found insightful. I preferred McCullough's version. I found it better than his work on John Adams (which I thought was way too long).

Ok, I assume the book associated with this influential person is the Bible.
