was the Doolittle Raid.
I'm surprised that no body even remembered.
And that 62 years ago today Ernie Pyle was killed at Okinawa.

I didn't realize that Ernie died on the anniversary of the Doolittle raid. That has a kind of ironic correctness to it. I picked up Here is your War a while back and it was very good. It's interesting to read contemporary accounts of what was going on back then. It's a shame Ernie didn't make it to the final end. Kind of wonder what he would have made of Hiroshima.

Here is another April date that probably means a bit more to you guys back east.

April 19th.

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
their flag to April's breeze unfurled
here once the embattled farmers stood
and fired the shot heard round the world.

Much as I respect and admire my British ancestors I'm kind of glad those farmers fired those shots.

Lexington and Concord, April 19 1775!

April 19 1943: Warsaw ghetto uprising against Nazis begins after police and troops were sent in to round up surviving Jews. 750 Jewish fighters fought against enormous odds until May 16. 56,000 Jews captured, 7000 summarily shot, the rest were transported to concentration & extermination camps.

Doolittle surprised the Japanese by bombing them before they hit Pearl Harbor?

66 years ago today my partner's late father was in Greece, by the same time in 1942, he was in Egypt.
