Noticed that one of the classic movie channels was playing 'Best Years of Our Lives' last night.

I have this on DVD and it has been one of my favorite movies for years. IMHO, one of the best WWII films ever made. Takes place on the homefront when the war is over, so no battles here.

Check this movie out. Its a drama, but I think you will like it.

Was wondering if anyone else has any similar non-war war films they like.

THE GODFATHER probably one of the best movies ever and when combined with GODFATHER 2 it defines epic screen :-) drama. ALIEN and ALIENS are the best sci-fi/horror movies ever with the former being the better of the two in the exceptional use of set design which forshadows the alien creature itself. The amazing compactness of the story, everything takes place iin one day in one place, the Nostromo. The second is a bit more like a calssic WWII war fllick with the diverse ethnic background of the crew. For comedies #:-) , THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY and RAISING ARIZONA just keep me in stitches.

THE GODFATHER

...

Good choices, but I was thinking of movies that are about war but don't really take place on the battlefield.

Not that I care for this film, but 'Born on the Fouth of July' is an example.

My favorite is "Courage under Fire"... I bought it primarily for the M1 tank battle scenes, but all in all I liked the different twists put on the storyline of what actually happened to Meg Ryan's chopper crew. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly reccomend it!

I just revisited "Barry Lyndon" this weekend. The overall theme is not about war, but has some really neat military stuff in it.
Another period favorite is "The Duellists"; talk about holding a grudge!

Dog Soldiers put italicized text here Despite this film is probably a Z-rating horror, I liked it. Has some pretty cool stuff when they fight the werewolves. I've always had a special place in my heart for horror movies, but when you combine military stuff and horror movies...Jeff is one happy movie freak.

I also like The Duelists. Keith Carradine as a Napoleonic cavalry officer sounds a bit far fetched. But, a good movie anyway.

If you want a good non-"war" history movie, I recommend "Matewan". This is about coal mining and strike breaking in West Virginia ~1900.

In keeping with the correct idea of this thread, I suggest On The Beach based on Nevil Shute's novel of the same name. Post apocalypse Aussies looking for any remnants of civilization. Not at all related thematicaly to the Mad Max films, though I like them, too. The original in glorious black and white was a bit better then the late 90's remake.

Good one. Seen it and remember it scared me when I was younger!

How about that movie about the kids in England during the Blitz? What's the name of the that one? Where the barrage balloon lands and the school gets blown-up in the end?

Is it 'Hope and Glory'?
