Here in New Zealand we take great pride in our contribution to the ANZAC legends; That pride has received a considerable knock with the news that from next year military service cadets are to use wooden cutout 'rifles' instead of real ones! For years cadets have commemorated ANZAC day by parading with old Lee-Enfields with blocked barrels - now they are to use wooden cut outs which approximate the shape of the Steyr Augs, which are standard issue for the NZ Army.

Maybe the cadets should also be dressed up as clowns, to make them look more
friendly.

well that should chase a lot of kids away from the cadets. Maybe they'll have to start using wooden approximates of cadets to hold the guns, to make up for the drop in numbers...

I hope you guys sort that out

Cheers

Here is what they need to do. The cadets need to take a page from British history, and show up with their own guns. Like the Home Guard did in the period after Dunkirk when stores were so bad they were being issues Pikes.

And here I thought we had the corner market on nitwits politicians.
I guess there are enough nitwits around the world to cover all the countries.

Jeff,
I just about blew my top when I read this in the herald (Actually I think I did) Like you said they might as well dress up as clowns. It dosen't matter is the guns are inoperable as long as the are "real" Kids get a joy from handling such things something not everyone else has done. I hope the people who call themselves our representives get their you know what into gear and sort this mess out. Rant over.

Careful what you say, our PC police are out there. Clown costumes may not be such a bad idea. Dressing up cadets as clowns would be far less threatening and in keeping with out defence policy, no tanks, no fighters and a Navy, well we seem to be sinking warships as artificial reefs faster than we replace them. I think that some of our policy makers need a d... good smacking

Well there goes my military pension

Here endth my rant.

A gentle reminder how our respective government always seem to forget what this day is about -what our soldiers have done -not what the Polies do -They have sent our countries to so many places yet it was the ANZACS who paid the ultimate price and the Cadets are part of that great ongoing respect -sure I hate war and wish we were not here or there but I will always respect those who show the way forward - shoot the polies and respect the military

wow,
maybe those politicians should forget being PC and go visit Gallipoli, and see what the ANZACs actually had to fight through. I was there last month and saw ANZAC Beach and the trenches - not something you'd want to fight in.
The ANZACs should be afforded a more dignified rememberance day.

Same thing happens everywhere - not only down in New Zealand or in US... We have a "nice" bunch here too!
It seems that they have a lot of time to think about issues that really don't matter to skip thinking and acting with the REAL PROBLEMS.

If they decide to dress the cadets as clowns, make sure that the clothes are safelly returned to the Politics after use

In this case, for once, the politicians aren't responsible for this one - It's the New Zealand 'Defence' Force hierarchy who are responsible for this.

Unfortunately a sense of history has no place in the thinking of the people who make these 'decisions' - the Lee Enfields may be tatty, old heavy and obsolete, but these were the weapons that were standard issue to our troops through both World Wars and Korea and Malaysia. The cadets take pride in having a link with the past. Refurbish the SMLEs and let the link continue!

Or am I being nostalgic?
I'm writing to the NZDF on this https://forms.nzdf.mil.nz/nzdf/contactform.asp I don't know whether it will make a difference, but I'm gonna try anyway.

Oh Crap!
"wooden cut-out rifles"... that's your complaint? the definition of military modeling.
That's what this site's about. Military MODELING.
Jeez man, every time I roll over, politics. Can you give me a break here. Let me build my models and see other's efforts.
"ANZAC day stupidity"... why don't our boys hab dem guns?
I don't know, maybe they gave all ten of your country's guns to your twelve coalition troops. I do know that ten good teeth and a plane ticket, gets you to Iraq in five hours. I'm constantly surprised at how many of our neighbors from ANZAC are home typing out missives on military use and execution...and... still there? Ante up mates? US Army? Blackwater?
Didn't think so...
I swear, the things some people whine about.
Now, what's your armor modeling project?

Edit: What do you think about going to the Defense Department's web site and complaining about Tamiya's M3 Lee turret?

The Spare Parts section is for 'For non-modelling topics. Rants or inflamitory comments will be removed."

Your ill tempered post plainly falls into the latter category, and if it irks you so much, why bother posting..?
Surely, you can't just have been looking at an excuse to have a dig at my country's defence forces - if so, good for you, big man, hope you felt a surge of blood to your reproductive parts after you'd sent that off...

However, some of us are actually proud that our Cadets turn out for Dawn Remembrance Services every ANZAC Day and feel that it would be more appropriate for them to either handle real weapons OR none at all.

FYI, we don't have any troops in the 'Coalition', but we do have Provincial Reconstruction Teams and SAS in Afghanistan, as well as troops in the Solomon Islands and with the UN in East Timor - in addition, we have Defence Personnel in Kosovo, Bosnia, Egypt, Lebanon, Sudan, South Korea and Antarctica - we may not want to sign up to your Imperial PNAC Project, but my country still puts people out there.
ANZAC Day is ours - butt out, it's not your place to diss my forebears.
Or will you sit back and let me take cheap shots about the US military next Veterans' Day..?

Armorama is the only place that I can read and share views with some NZ and Australian modellers, about modelling or other topics.

I think you're out of line and an apology is in order.

Mate

You should heed your own message. You will notice that there is no where forcing you to read or comment on this so if its beyond your interest how stupid would have to be to flame people? Talk about finding something to whine about, you're whinge is bigger than any previous post!

Here's a tip; If you're interested only in discussing modelling, don't read the "Spare Parts" posts.

Cheers
Wiz

Don. Get a life, buster! I take pride in Australia & New Zealand's fine fighting legacy, and I also understand the way the US fighting troops have served their country and saved ours. If this http://www.nvf.org/facts.html is anything to go by, your government has a ways to go in recognising your war veterans.

This is in 'SPARE PARTS' because I know it ain't modelling.

Sanity prevails... at least temporarily...

Cadets to keep real rifles

Defence Force cadets will still turn out at Anzac Day parades with "real" rifles. Yesterday's announcement follows a blast from National Party veterans affairs spokeswoman Judith Collins over plans to parade the 4000 cadets, aged 13 to 18, with fake wooden rifles.

Lieutenant Colonel Bob Campbell, Commandant New Zealand Cadet Forces, said the .303 and SLR drill rifles would be withdrawn later this year but the best of them would be refurbished to be available for ceremonial occasions.

Ah, Good news acav, thanks mate! It may seem trivial to some, I prefer to think of it as taking pride in the proud ANZAC spirit.

Okay, just one last piece to add to this story, then I'll leave it alone..
Honest.

Was watching what passes for news on teevy the other night, I guess it was Sky News from Australia and there was an item about the upcoming ANZAC Day commemorations.
As part of the item there was a clip showing an Honour Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, resplendent in what looked like Light Horse uniforms and armed with - ta-dah! - No.1 Mk III SMLE Lee-Enfield Rifles...

Obviously no problem with learning the Drills across the Tasman then..?

Just interesting, that's all...
