Is it a forgone conclusion that Canada will replace our 1st gen Leopard tanks with the Leopard 2? I know we were looking at the Stryker-type mobile gun system but that plan's been scrapped (thank goodness!). Are there any other contenders?

Both the Abrams and Leopard 2 were considered as replacements for the Leopard C2 after the MGS was cancelled.

The Leopard 2 is working out better as far as leasing tanks for Afghanistan, purchasing tanks, maintainence support, spare parts, etc.

This is of course pending the official announcement.

Back in 1986 when the Defence White Paper called for new tanks to replace the Leopard C1 these tanks were the contenders- Leopard 2A4, M1A1 Abrams, Challenger 1, and the Leclerc.

Yeah, it appears the Leo 2 is the front runner. Leclerc?... now that would be something.....

Only the Abrams and Leopard 2 were looked at to replace the Leopard C2 most recently.

The other tanks were only considered back in the 1980s as they were the four most advanced tanks at the time.

The Leopard 2A6M will be going to Afghanistan with Canadian crews.

I think the only 2 real choices are the Leo2 and the Abrams.
