Hi,
Here are a few websites I buy from:
http://www.rjproducts.com
http://www.discountmodels.com
http://www.squadron.com
http://www.luckymodel.com
Here is the mother of all modeling website collections:
http://www.scalemodelindex.com
Hope this helps,
Scott

Yes - this one. If you have a model in mind you can ask about it here. What's it like? who has it in stock? what's their service like? etc.
For kits I would recommend Spruebrothers in the US and Hobblink Japan and Luckymodel in Asia, generally their prices work out cheap than local stores here even with postage.
Check out the sidebar ads here onb Armorama too.
Likewise if you're looking for specific tools ask here and you will get recommendations

As for where to buy, I can suggest any of the advertisers on this site, as I have done business with them all. (OK except WW2 Guns-just not my thing)
Don't forget to mention Armorama when you order.
As for tips, have you read the hundreds of features on the kitmaker network, or the thousands of threads? You just may surprise yourself with the data on this site.
