The Maginot Line is infamous for having failed to protect France from being invaded and conquered by the Germans, even though ironically it worked as it was designed to. But I wonder if the wall itself was ever breached at any point, either by the Germans or by the Allies when they went into Germany?

As far as I know the Maginot line was not breached. I even think that the powerfull guns never fired a real action shot because the Maginot line was never attacked.
Actually, it acted as a trap for many thousands of the best and highly trained french troops who remained useless in their big Maginot bunkers while the Germans performed their blitzkrieg through Belgium and drove into France in almost unprotected area's.
The Maginot line would only have been useful if it would have stretched from the Alpes to the Atlantic Ocean (but that was a bit too expensive to realise) and not would have been limited to the French-German common border.

Hi all,
The Maginot line comes from headquarter minds who think the war would be the same as the 1914-18 war : a static war. Only De Gaulle, when he was a young tank officer, urged the "Etat Major" to rethink their strategy by including and using extensively the tanks.
@ Drabslab : there was a kind of Maginot line in the Alpes, organised around very well defend bunker. It caused some troubles to the Italians when they tried to invade south of France in the same time Germans attacked north. I visited one in the mountained surrounding nice, quite a nice museum ! When you thought the money spend in building those huge fortresses could have been invested in tank research and planes productions...
