While looking through my newest reference book I thought of a question. I've never had the opportunity to go through any kind of archives for photos. I was wondering what size are these usually, and how much info do they have? The photos in the book are fairly small so you can't see much detail, like unit insignias and such. Are the photos in the archives large enough you can see small details like this, or are they well documented so units can be I.D'd that way?

I haven't had that opportunity either but the Imperial War Museum is in the process of putting it's entire archive online and can be viewd at

http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/

go to search in the top right hand corner of the IWM page where it says choose a collection and click on photographs then enter a key word. I can't remember how much it costs to buy a photo but they send an 8' by 10'
This is the size of the photos online
