I was wondering if you all knew of any tour companies or guides that specialized in detailed WWII historical tours along the coast of France or even within Germany proper?

The History Channel on line has a listing for tours. I don't have any info on how good they are at all, but you can check them out.

If I'd had known grand kids were so much fun I'd have had them first.

These tours looks very good, moreover if you have a capable guide ! The price is nice also :-)
You definitively has to make the Normandy beaches. It gives you goose flesh when you think what should have been these assaults against those cliffs... and the region is full of small museum, bunkers etc everywhere. You must do the memorial museum of Caen is you stay in Caen...it's very interactive !
Best,
